00:00 Defensively, a shift was put in by the players and we're pretty effective on the defensive
00:26 side of things but on transition, so many giveaways, so many loose passes and that first
00:31 pass is so important, wrong decision making. So we never really got to grips with that
00:37 side of things on transition or dealing with the ball to be honest, the idea of being brave
00:42 with the ball, I don't think it was there today. It has been more or less this season
00:46 but not so much today. But I must say, that's a very good side I thought and some said they
00:53 haven't started that well, they look like a decent outfit to me, an outfit that went
00:57 second last year and spent a couple of hundred million quid. So they're a pretty good outfit
01:01 that's for sure and it's not just with the ball. I always mention about Man City, of
01:05 course they're technically bright with the ball but they work very hard and they anticipate
01:08 the game very well on transition and without the ball and I thought there were signs of
01:12 that from them today without a doubt.
01:13 How much are you willing to put that down to what you just mentioned, the fact that
01:20 this is against a very good Arsenal side or are you more concerned longer term?
01:23 Our growth is still where we are, there's a reality. I spoke very clearly at the end
01:28 of last season, nothing was solved, there's massive work to be done. I must say I thought
01:34 we'd have more points on the board by now because of the performance levels we've shown
01:37 but the league doesn't lie so therefore that's that. Against Ede it is a tough ask and I
01:42 thought like I say they played well but our side of things, I'm frustrated because you
01:47 can't give the ball away that many times. You break the play up from your shape and
01:51 your work ethic, the number of times you gave the ball away or made poor decisions and then
01:55 of course having the energy and the mental energy that when you do work in transition
01:59 you're then active, not just everyone waiting for the chance to break or the chance to build,
02:05 then everyone's active and I think that kind of link on transition was missing and I think
02:09 in the end we weren't effective enough to answer many questions of Arsenal.
02:14 It's three consecutive home defeats, you've got to go Brentford away next week and then
02:18 there's a doubleheader against Winterform which presents an opportunity for Everton,
02:23 what do you think needs to change to turn the performances that underlie some of the
02:28 results so far?
02:29 The details, they scored what would be deemed a good finish today from their level, which
02:33 it was, but the details, tuning in and anticipating the game. Arsenal did it much better than
02:38 us in our possession today. The details of football are not always as clearly obvious
02:43 on the eye, I can see it but the transition of football, people reading situations and
02:51 people delivering the details, it's so big that it sounds easy when I throw that word
02:56 out there but when you've been in the game as long as I have you understand it more clearly
03:01 and I think our players, we're still trying to get them to understand how important everything
03:05 that happens in a game is, not just some things, not just a good day or a bad day, what about
03:09 every single detail of the game and I think we haven't put that learning onto the pitch
03:15 yet so far this season because of the obvious reason, we've been conceding softish goals
03:20 from our point of view, made so many chances and not finding the clinical moment in the
03:24 opposite box and that's because of the details, that's how important they are.
03:28 Can I just ask what the thought process was behind the play from the left?
03:32 Yeah, just balance, trying to find that balance, I think Miko had two solid performances while
03:36 he's been away, I've been waiting for him to get fit, I thought he played well today,
03:39 he stayed at it, I thought Jarrod was good again today, that's pleasing, young centre
03:43 half man in his spurs, there were some pleasing aspects to the game but just against Arsenal,
03:48 I'm not just going to brush that away, we want to do better for ourselves with possession,
03:54 we want to build from the back better, there wasn't any clear signs of that and if we're
03:59 not playing that well because they're pressing you, then you've got to play well in different
04:02 ways and be effective in other ways. I don't want to cry in too much, I can't work out
04:07 if we don't get a penalty for Duke, for the simple reason that second half Beto pushed
04:11 it past the centre half and he gets booked, it's a very similar kind of challenge to me
04:16 but then again I think we all lose clarity I would suggest on what penalties are, what
04:23 penalties are not, four minutes at the end, two weeks ago they almost can't wait for a
04:27 goal by adding more minutes onto the eight minutes, yesterday I think it was 17 minutes
04:32 at Villa, who knows, I don't know some of these things, I know it will take a while
04:37 to iron out, who knows but you do need some of those things to work for you, not against
04:43 you that's for sure.
04:44 The expectation this season has been that there's more time, added time in games, you're
04:50 brought on Scheletti and Garner, did you hope they would have that extra time?
05:01 Yeah by then you're searching for a moment but it does happen as we know, four minutes
05:07 I was very surprised, let's put it that way, I think everyone in the stadium was very surprised
05:12 after what we've been told in the directive of the new season, after what I'm seeing with
05:16 my eyes, after what the feeling of other games has been, other games we've played in let
05:20 alone all the numbers I keep seeing across football, and their four goes up and it's
05:24 almost, well currently it's almost extraordinary I think, whereas last season that would be
05:27 pretty standard, whereas now they've been told virtually everything is going to be stopped,
05:31 well it didn't look like everything was stopped today to me and added on but anyways, I'm
05:37 not crying that in though, Arsenal are a very good side, they played very well today and
05:40 we didn't do enough to win.
05:41 Just on Arsenal's goal, it came from a short corner, that was a bit of a theme today, did
05:50 people perhaps catch you off guard?
05:53 No we dealt with all the other ones very well, we just didn't tune into the moment, obviously
05:58 we analyse set pieces so we know what they're going to do, our record's very strong, it
06:03 has been for and against over the time I've been here and it has been over my career so
06:07 I'm not too worried about that, but you put the players in a situation, they've got to
06:11 read the situation and I just don't think we did and they capitalised with a very good
06:15 finish.
06:16 I think Sky said it took them 26 seconds to take the corner and we were talking about
06:21 added on...
06:22 Don't even, I can't work it out honestly, I don't know how long the goal kits take,
06:26 I don't know how long the corners, I really don't know, football is in a very good place
06:33 in many ways, but in some ways I think we all scratch our heads, they keep messing around
06:37 with all sorts of different things and sometimes better left alone, but anyway we're going
06:41 to have to keep working with it.
06:43 I'm surprised by today, I'm surprised by the performance of the officials actually, but
06:48 anyways these new directors come in and it takes time for them to work I imagine, but
06:51 today it just felt like same old, same old to me.
06:56 Can you just pass the microphone?
06:59 Excuse me.
07:00 Sean, obviously not the whole team so far, some supporters, you get frustrated, how do
07:10 you go about turning it around and making this play?
07:13 I don't think, I haven't got the whole history of them, but I think the last few seasons
07:18 they've not been scoring a lot of goals, so you're changing the mindset, you're changing
07:21 the belief system, you're changing the players to try and be effective.
07:26 Hardest thing for any managers, coaches and players is finding that key moment, that's
07:30 why the people who do find those key moments move for astronomical figures.
07:33 So that's the belief that I have in the players, it's got to be transmitted into their moment
07:38 of truth, when the ball lands, when you create chances, I think you all know I'm not going
07:43 to bore you with it, the XG is off the scale this season, I think we're in the top four
07:46 of the Premier League, not that that's an exact thing as we know, but it's a guideline,
07:51 not so much today but you're playing the top side obviously, so that side of things is
07:55 the moment of truth when that comes, freeing yourself up to go and take them moments, make
08:00 them part of what we do, and changing the noise if you like, that's another part of
08:04 this, we're trying to change the noise for a couple of seasons on many, many different
08:07 things, I spoke clearly about it last season, I spoke clearly at the end of the season,
08:11 I'm speaking clearly about it now, it's our responsibility to change the story, it's our
08:15 responsibility to change the rhetoric and all these stats and facts, that's the way
08:20 it goes, that's football, it's our responsibility to change it.
08:23 Any further questions?
08:25 Cheers
08:28 Cheers
