Dominic Scurr reflects on Newcastle United's 1-0 win over Brentford on Saturday. Callum Wilson scored the only goal of the game at St James' Park.

00:00 Newcastle United back to winning ways in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Brentford

00:06 at St James' Park this evening. Callum Wilson's second half penalty, the difference. On another

00:11 day Callum Wilson would probably feel he should have had a hat-trick through, no fault of

00:15 his own really. He had a goal disallowed in the second half again for a foul on the goalkeeper

00:21 which was tenuous at best. Referee Craig Pawson ruled it out. And then Newcastle had a penalty

00:28 that was awarded late on after Wilson had already converted earlier. Handball, Brian

00:37 Mbuemo, referee points to the spot, VAR intervenes, says go check it. Craig Pawson watches, the

00:47 ball hit Mbuemo's hand but then deems it's not a penalty. So, interesting calls made

00:58 but ultimately Newcastle got the result over the line, the second win of the season, ends

01:04 a run of three consecutive defeats. Now we're heading into the Champions League opener at

01:09 AC Milan on a bit of a high and two wins now this season, looks a bit better. Heading into

01:17 a fairly favourable run of fixtures if they can carry on this momentum in the Premier

01:21 League after what has been, let's be honest, a really, really difficult start. Would have

01:26 expected Newcastle to pick up more points than they have, certainly should have beat

01:30 Liverpool given the way that game unfolded. Disappointed with the Brentford performance

01:37 and then Man City, if you're picking up anything there it's probably a bonus. So, six points

01:44 on the board now, going into AC Milan on a high. In terms of the game today I thought

01:49 Newcastle looked like a team, Eddie Howe made five changes, they looked like a team who

01:54 were a bit disjointed. We saw Elliot Anderson, Sean Longstaff, Harvey Barnes all make their

02:00 first starts of the season, Callum Wilson as well who got the goal, Anthony Gordon switched

02:05 to the right hand side, Miguel Almiron who came out, Sandro Tonali dropped to the bench

02:10 after an injury, Joe Linton dropped out entirely, should be out for about three weeks following

02:16 a knee injury while away with Brazil. So, wholesale changes really by Eddie Howe's standards,

02:22 Newcastle did look like, just struggled, looked like a team who had been messed with

02:30 if you like the first half hour. So, Brentford weren't up to much certainly in the first

02:37 half. Newcastle had a couple of half chances but Bruno Guimaraes with a big one in the

02:46 first half, header saved by the goalkeeper. But then second half I thought Newcastle came

02:51 into the game, the key players grew into the game, Bruno was a lot more imposing, Sean

02:58 Longstaff, welcome return to the side for him despite a couple of glaring shaky moments,

03:05 I thought generally, his general play brought a bit more intensity back to the midfield

03:10 and then Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes on either wing. Barnes, slow start to the

03:15 game of poor first half I thought but solid in the second half and posed a threat and

03:19 Anthony Gordon won the penalty, was fouled by the goalkeeper for the penalty and put

03:26 the cross in that would have potentially led to the second penalty as well. He was a threat

03:32 with his pace down that right hand side and lasted the full 90 minutes as well despite

03:37 picking up a slight knock to his knee during the game but managed to see out the game.

03:43 All in all a good day for Newcastle, not about the performance, about the win and Newcastle

03:50 got that today and now look ahead to what will be a memorable trip to AC Milan and hopefully

03:56 they can carry on that momentum they've picked up and get another win at the San Siro on
