Covid-19: What to know before winter

Government advice states people at greatest risk of serious illness from Covid, including care home residents, over 65s and frontline health and social care workers. With this in mind, what are a few things you should know about Covid-19, ahead of winter?

00:00 We might be over the warm weather and it seems we're approaching the cold season.

00:05 And as we do, the NHS recommends that people remain vigilant for signs of COVID-19.

00:10 The pandemic, which began late in 2019, continues to affect communities around the world

00:15 with the emergence of the latest variant, which has seen an increase in cases in the UK since summer.

00:21 At the moment, NHS guidance suggests that if you do test positive for the virus,

00:25 you should try to stay at home and avoid contact with others for just five days.

00:30 While there is no longer a legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive for COVID-19,

00:35 many people still may want to isolate themselves until they are not infectious.

00:39 If you have a high temperature or are still unwell after the five days,

00:43 stay at home and do this until you feel well enough to go back to normal activities.

00:47 A study by Harvard University said people are thought to be most contagious early in the course of their illness.

00:53 You may be able to get a seasonal COVID vaccine jab in autumn if you're at increased risk of infection.
