Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on September 13 paid a visit to the flood-hit areas of Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla including the Shiv Temple at Summer Hill and met with the flood-affected victims. The area was hit by a massive landslide on August 14, which claimed at least 19 lives.

00:00 "The situation is very bad. If the central government announces a national disaster,
00:05 it can benefit the entire state.
00:07 It seems that they are not able to understand how much damage has been done here.
00:11 The farmers here are getting less.
00:13 Instead of helping them, you are helping the American farmers."

00:58 "You have visited the affected areas.
01:01 What is the situation?
01:03 What is the need to announce a national disaster?"
01:06 "The situation is very bad. I have been observing since yesterday.
01:10 I have seen such things for the first time.
01:15 People have been badly affected.
01:20 Many places have been flooded.
01:25 The National Highway has been flooded.
01:27 We went to Manali and the lake area yesterday.
01:32 We have seen a lot of damage.
01:35 We said yesterday that this is a time when everyone should come together
01:41 and face this disaster together.
01:44 The people of Himachal Pradesh and the government of Himachal Pradesh
01:50 have shown their support for the entire country.
01:53 I saw some women working in the fields and helping to build roads.
02:01 Some small traders gave cheques and donations
02:07 to help those who have been affected.
02:11 The government of Himachal Pradesh has shown support for the people of Himachal Pradesh.
02:19 The Chief Minister and all the ministers are working together.
02:22 They have been working 24 hours during and after the disaster.
02:26 They have announced how they will help.
02:29 The Chief Minister has made a list of all the places where compensation is to be given.
02:35 But as we have been saying, if the central government announces that this is a national disaster,
02:44 it can be very beneficial for the state and can help.
02:48 In fact, their policies seem to be unable to understand how much damage has been done here.
02:55 Yesterday, I saw that the import of apples from the US has been reduced by 25% to 15%.
03:07 This means that the import of apples has been made easier.
03:11 Whereas, the big industrialists here, especially in Shimla,
03:15 have reduced the price of apples.
03:18 This means that the farmers here are getting less.
03:21 The damage has already been done. Instead of helping them, you are helping the American farmers.
03:28 We are not understanding these things.
03:30 We want the central government and the Chief Minister to look at how they can help.
03:37 Especially those who have been affected.
03:39 If this is declared a national disaster, it can be very beneficial for those who have been affected.
03:45 Will you be taking up this issue? Will the Congress Party be taking up this issue in the Parliament?
03:53 I think, in fact, Pratibha ji was mentioning yesterday that she would like to take it up in Parliament.
03:58 We don't know what the special session will be about, whether they will allow these issues to come up.
04:03 But we were discussing that even if that doesn't happen, representation should go to the central government.
04:09 We will all put our strength in that and try to convince the government that they must declare it a national disaster zone.
04:17 Because certain things can only be done by the central government.
04:21 The National Highway, for example, that is in a bad condition.
04:25 That can only be fixed by the National Highway Authority.
04:28 There are many other things that are in the prerogative of the central government.
04:33 And this is not a time, as I said yesterday, that we should not be doing politics on this.
04:39 And I don't think anyone else would like to do it.
04:42 This is not the time to see that there is a Congress government or a BJP government here.
04:48 This is a time when such a disaster has never happened before.
04:52 And people are so worried and so desperate.
04:56 Everyone should come forward to help them.
04:58 There should be no political action on this.
05:01 The central government should also understand that we are doing what we can.
