00:11 I was living alone, I was isolated by myself.

00:15 That was a massive contributor to why I chose

00:18 to try and end my life on Christmas Eve, 2019.

00:22 Am I alone in my loneliness?

00:25 - Absolutely not, Joey.

00:27 Loneliness is now identified as one of the next

00:30 important public health crisis of our time.

00:32 - Loneliness is not just a vague feeling

00:35 that I'm a bit lonely.

00:36 Loneliness should really be thought of as a disease.

00:39 - What are some of the things that are threatening

00:45 the loss of these communities?

00:47 - That is the biggest question to ask.

00:49 - So the number one thing the brain likes the most

00:53 is stress.

00:54 We feel anxious about this idea of having to go out

00:57 and meet people.

00:58 - Would anyone else like a chocolate?

01:01 - This is at us the whole time, threats.

01:04 The world is a bad place.

01:05 - Contactless has almost become a luxury.

01:08 We could go days without seeing another person

01:10 if we didn't want to leave the house.

01:12 - What does loneliness mean in the age of social media?

01:16 - There's no effort in the housing design

01:19 to get people to actually come together and interact.

01:22 - We can make up any number of excuses

01:23 not to speak to people.

01:25 The hard bit is to actually decide to speak to people.

01:28 - I wonder if you ever dream of a better society.

01:33 - Tell me a little bit more about the community

01:36 that you're building.

01:37 - Connections become a little bit like exercise.

01:39 We have to be intentional.

01:41 We know it is the best thing for our wellbeing.

01:44 - So you're telling me that I need to see my brain

01:46 as a muscle and I need to work on making that bigger

01:48 and stronger.

01:49 - I'm Joe.

01:52 - How good's that?

01:53 - If enough of us start acting to alleviate loneliness

01:57 right where we live, before long,

01:59 you've got a national revolution on your hands.

02:02 - So then in that moment, you are not alone.

02:04 - And that's a beautiful thing, isn't it?

02:05 - It is.

02:06 And that's what saves people.

02:08 - Mate, I have just been on the most wild journey.
