00:00 You know, I mean, the game has just, and quite frankly, I think the NBA has benefited from
00:04 it.
00:05 I think with the Yokach's of the world, I think there's at times a more fundamental
00:10 product coming out of Europe.
00:11 I think it's better for the NBA.
00:12 I think it's better for the game overall.
00:14 The Ryan Goodman and Tangway podcast is brought to you by FanDuel, the exclusive wagering
00:20 partner of the CLNX Media Network.
00:23 All right, it's that time again.
00:25 Bob Ryan, Jeff Goodman, again, taking the day off along with Tangway, along with the
00:29 Ryan podcast.
00:30 One of my old classmates, Dan Smith, up in Maine is the executive producer and chief
00:35 engineer of this show.
00:36 Bob, tell everybody where you are and what's in the background.
00:39 I mean, I know where it is, but what is it?
00:42 That is Web Lake, which is located in, I would say, West Central Maine.
00:46 It's about 20 miles from Farmington.
00:49 And of course, it's in the greater Mexico area, as anyone should know.
00:53 And this is where we're spending a good deal of time this summer.
00:57 And I'll be here for another week or two, a week or so.
01:01 And that's the background.
01:02 The lake is, this is where we're sitting.
01:04 I'm looking right out at the lake.
01:06 And every day, it's a very bucolic spot.
01:11 And it is one of the best kept secrets.
01:13 And hopefully, we'll keep it that way.
01:16 But Western Maine is gorgeous.
01:17 And Danny, thanks a lot for the help.
01:19 Okay, we are sponsored by FanDuel.
01:22 Get ready for the NFL season with incredible offers from FanDuel, America's number one
01:26 sports book.
01:27 Right now, new customers can bet $5 and get 200 in bonus bets guaranteed.
01:31 All right, Bob, you're following the US World Championships.
01:35 USA lost.
01:36 Your thoughts on that and what does it mean for the program?
01:38 Well, we sent a B+ team.
01:43 And we paid the price.
01:47 We lost to Germany today by two points.
01:48 We were down 10 points late, made a fireman finish, didn't make it.
01:54 Lost by two.
01:55 We lost 11-1 on nine, something like that.
01:57 Germany has NBA players.
02:00 You'll love this, Gary.
02:01 24 points today out of Daniel Tice.
02:04 He was 10 for 15 from the program.
02:07 Our old friend in Celtics, Daniel Tice, was a star today.
02:10 Of course, you have the Wagner brothers, Franssen, Mertz, and of course, Dennis Schroeder, who
02:16 was a prominent again.
02:18 We had played Germany in the run up in Abu Dhabi.
02:23 That game was televised.
02:24 I watched the whole thing a couple of weeks ago.
02:26 We were down 16 points in the third.
02:28 We made a big comeback and we won going away.
02:31 And I wondered when it was over, should I be happy or sad about that?
02:36 And how do I feel about that?
02:37 And it turns out I should have been sad.
02:40 It was a real omen.
02:41 And we struggled.
02:42 Of course, we already lost to Lithuania on the way, but we made it to the medal round.
02:50 We wowed Italy in the preceding game, and now we pay the price.
02:54 We lost to Germany, who will play, by the way, Serbia, who beat Canada, who I thought
02:59 had a team that had a real shot at it.
03:01 And the thing about Serbia, you don't know who any of these people are because Djokic
03:06 didn't even play.
03:08 And Serbia remains for 30 years, going back to when it was one of the republics that made
03:14 up the old Yugoslavia.
03:16 Serbia has been a power in international basketball for over 30 years, and it remains so.
03:23 And congratulations to them.
03:24 I think it's wonderful that they beat the two great North American powers.
03:28 I mean, Canada was loaded.
03:29 They had everybody they should have except them.
03:31 Bob, I know you're sad, but let me see if I can help you out a little bit here.
03:35 I'm going to be the optimist.
03:37 Isn't it cool that it's an international game?
03:40 I mean, you know, I mean, the game has just, and quite frankly, I think the NBA has benefited
03:45 from it.
03:46 I think with the Jokic's of the world, I think there's at times a more fundamental product
03:52 coming out of Europe.
03:53 I think it's better for the NBA.
03:54 I think it's better for the game overall.
03:55 I mean, let's face it, you know, look, I'm as patriotic as the next guy.
04:00 But when it comes to the nationalism, because of the world is so small, it's kind of not
04:03 the same.
04:04 OK, you're right.
04:05 Oh, I'm the first to argue that, you know, I've been trying to explain to people for
04:10 a long time that how the Dream Team was created, why it was created, had nothing to do with
04:16 our desire to avenge the loss in Seoul in '88.
04:19 It was all about the head of SPIBA who wanted to, you know, raise the bar for the rest of
04:28 the world.
04:29 They're shown where they have to be.
04:30 And that was the derivation of enticing the Americans to come in the Olympics in '92
04:37 with the big so-called Dream Team.
04:39 Oh, I'm happy.
04:40 Every year, there's over 100 quote unquote internationals on NBA rosters.
04:46 And as you said, Germany has got four guys who were prominent in beating us today are
04:50 NBA players, you know, and one of them is going, I think, Franz Wagner is a star in
04:54 the making.
04:55 And so good luck to them.
04:56 I'm happy for them.
04:57 I know.
04:58 As I said, you know, I still root for us.
04:59 I want us to win.
05:00 Here's the thing, one big takeaway that was driven home in the loss to Lithuania.
05:08 The great big men of the world are all developed outside the United States.
05:14 Are we paying a price?
05:15 Now this is a two-edged sword here.
05:18 I'll play the background.
05:20 Are we paying a price for the fact that our big men are no longer bred to be big men?
05:24 That they're all supposed to be standing out there shooting threes?
05:26 They're supposed to be stretching the floor?
05:28 That they're not pivot-oriented players anymore?
05:31 They're not low-post aircraft carriers as the late Al McGuire would say?
05:38 Lithuania out-rebounded us badly.
05:40 They tortured us inside.
05:42 And concurrently, Garrett, they hit their first nine threes.
05:47 That's in the game that we lost to Lithuania.
05:49 Germany, now we were 12 for 25 on threes ourselves today.
05:52 We can't, you know, that's okay, you know, fine.
05:56 But our inside game was lacking.
05:58 And here's the two big men that we had on the team.
06:02 Jaron Jackson Jr., who was the defensive player of the year.
06:04 And that's his forte, blocking shots and clogging the lane.
06:07 He's a social offensive player.
06:10 And Walker Kessler, who I believe got a DNP today.
06:13 He was a rookie, you know, and he's a shot blocker, not noted for his offense.
06:19 That was our so-called big men.
06:21 The cry went up immediately after the Lithuania loss.
06:24 We better entice newly crowned American citizen Joel Embiid to be joining us in Paris next
06:31 year if we think we're going to win and avenge this and win in Paris.
06:36 Big men, we are not developing proper big men anymore.
06:40 And the rest of the world seems to find balance.
06:42 As I pointed out, Lithuania hits nine threes in a row and then they beat us with the big
06:45 men.
06:46 I mean, that's modern basketball.
06:47 >> Well, and that's basketball though, because I miss the big man.
06:51 >> Oh, I do too.
06:53 >> I miss the big man.
06:54 >> Look at who the big men are in the world.
06:57 You know, Joe Kitsch, of course, is one and Embiid, of course, is from Cameroon, but we've
07:00 now put him under our umbrella.
07:03 And Giannis is from Greece.
07:04 He didn't even play in this tournament.
07:06 And he's not a center of all, of course, but he's the main big man.
07:11 We got other Central Europeans.
07:13 I can never get them all straight.
07:15 You know, they're all in it with the sea and the Lucianis.
07:19 Oh my God.
07:20 Anyway, America's lacking in this kind of thing.
07:22 And Carl Anthony Towns, who by the way, is Canadian.
07:26 No, no, no, no, he's not.
07:28 But he should have been on this team too.
07:30 So anyway, we have to think about the roster composition now in terms of Paris, the Olympics.
07:37 We've qualified.
07:38 This team qualified us, by the way.
07:39 That was their job.
07:40 You know, the number one job is make sure you qualify for the Olympics.
07:44 And the second way, yeah, oh, that's okay, win that so-called world championship.
07:48 Now you know that the international people are hoping to make the world championship
07:54 more important than the Olympics.
07:56 And that's their goal.
07:57 And the rest of the world, they've always cherished the world championships on all sports.
08:02 You know, they're much more important in all sports than Americans realize.
08:06 Americans only think in terms every four years of Olympic sports.
08:09 And meanwhile, all these world championships go on and all these different sports, which
08:12 are very, very valued by the rest of the world and not so valued by Americans who think only
08:17 of the Olympics.
08:18 That's another story for another day.
08:20 And it's not a basketball topic.
08:22 Okay.
08:23 So anyway, we're out going gang.
08:25 It's going to be Serbia versus Germany for the World Basketball Championship on Sunday.
08:31 And Bob Ryan will be watching somewhere.
08:33 I don't know.
08:34 I may not be in a position to watch.
08:38 But anyways, I will be in neutral though.
08:41 I will salute whoever emerges.
08:43 They will have my admiration.
08:46 Bob, was there some player that you saw, because you have a great eye for this.
08:52 Was there some unknown or unknown to you that you've seen during this international play
08:57 where you went, "Oh, who's this guy?"
08:59 Well, I appreciate that.
09:03 Not that that didn't happen this time, but we did have one revelation on the American
09:06 team, which is a continuing revelation.
09:08 And it was important again today.
09:11 Austin Reeves is a player.
09:13 The Lakers have some.
09:15 And we found that out in the playoffs last year.
09:18 I mean, a year ago at this time, raise your hand out there, people, if you knew who he
09:22 was, if you ever heard of him.
09:24 You'd have to be a big college basketball fan to even have known who Austin Reeves was.
09:28 I didn't know him myself.
09:32 So this came out that we got to put that.
09:36 That's the one American star that emerged.
09:38 The best player was Anthony Evans throughout.
09:41 Other than that, we had a lot of disappointment.
09:45 But we had a team with Bobby Portis.
09:47 Bobby Portis, no offense, but if he's on your American team, come on.
09:53 This is a B plus for B team at best.
09:56 And we paid a price.
09:58 You're wearing the shirt, I believe, is that an Around the Horn shirt?
10:01 Yes, it is.
10:02 Now in our 22nd year.
10:05 Amazing.
10:06 So on the mothership, ESPN, they have the all time top 30.
10:11 And we're going to let Bob Ryan have fun with this.
10:14 What do you got?
10:15 Well, I was skeptical when I found out that there was such a thing, because the way that
10:21 the turn of the 20th century voting went, if you want, to pick the greatest athletes
10:29 of the 20th century, and Bill Russell wound up 18, I think, right away, I said, stop it
10:35 right now.
10:36 I got to take more than a 20 second full time out.
10:39 And most of these lists are, I think, ignorant.
10:43 This list, I like to know, I'll tell you, this list of the top 30 players, now, and
10:50 it is supposed to be all encompassing, and you'll see who's number 28.
10:54 Although I'm just looking at this.
10:58 Yeah, it's a better list than I would have expected.
11:02 For example, here's the top 10.
11:05 Ready?
11:06 Michael, number one, LeBron, number two, Kareem, number three, Magic, four, Wilt, five, you
11:13 know, some will have to have last names, Russ, six, Larry, seven, Duncan, eight, that's one
11:20 I, you know, he doesn't go by Tim, Austin, nine, and Kobe, 10.
11:25 That tells you a lot about the NBA.
11:28 That by the way, my official top eight are, they have my official top eight, the orders
11:37 of it out.
11:39 But that's, I agree with that 100.
11:41 Yeah, I don't have a problem with that.
11:43 Oscar nine, I have no problem.
11:45 I might stick Kobe ahead Oscar, historic, I don't know.
11:48 But and then, and then, right?
11:49 Second 10, Shaq's at 11, Durant 12, Hakim 13, Dr. J 14, Moses Malone 15, Curry 16, Dirk
12:00 17, Giannis 18, Jerry West, I could have just said Jerry 19, and Elgin 20.
12:07 Hmm, that's a little different.
12:10 I think it's good.
12:11 Shaq's gonna be down that list for me.
12:15 Well, you know how I feel.
12:17 I know.
12:18 That's a softball.
12:19 I'm gonna get to my two crusades.
12:20 You know, that's what the hell.
12:23 Shaq belongs in the top 20.
12:26 Right.
12:27 But he but Hakim has to be ahead of Shaq.
12:30 Of course he does.
12:31 And so does Durant.
12:32 And Durant should be ahead of us.
12:34 And Durant is the highest ranking contemporary player that's playing in the league today.
12:39 The only other one on the list right now is Giannis.
12:42 Well, you got LeBron, you got LeBron.
12:44 And LeBron, I'm sorry, LeBron.
12:46 That's a gift.
12:47 He's so historical.
12:48 It's walking history, obviously.
12:49 So LeBron's number two, we got three of the top 20.
12:53 We have three, two, three contemporaries.
12:55 You like Curry in there?
12:57 I damn well do.
12:58 I think he makes a hell of a case for the top 10.
13:04 I think, oh my God.
13:06 That's good.
13:07 But who would you take out of the top 10 for Steph?
13:09 Well, it would be, you know, the nine, nine, 10, 11.
13:13 Yeah, we got, we got Kobe, Oscar and Curry, frankly, in my opinion, in some order, in
13:19 some order.
13:20 And Curry's got to be in that discussion for a very simple reason.
13:23 And not only is, you know, the numbers, we all know how he is the most influential player
13:28 of this century, of this new century.
13:31 He's influencing basketball at every level all over America.
13:34 Every little kid, eight year olds are shooting threes.
13:36 Curry is the model.
13:37 I mean, whether I, you know how I feel about the three.
13:41 But it's here, it ain't going anywhere.
13:44 And he is the greatest exponent of it that we've yet known.
13:46 He's the greatest shooter of all time.
13:47 He's a great, and plus he can go to the basket at will too.
13:49 He's a great offensive player.
13:51 And I just think you can make a very strong case for him being as high as nine after Duncan,
13:56 where I think the cutoff line is clear and they got the right eight people.
14:01 I'm so pleased at the top eight.
14:04 You know, Magic Four and Larry, I always say Magic and Larry, it's a twin, two headed,
14:10 you know, they're Siamese twins.
14:11 Yeah, Siamese twins.
14:12 So, you know, I would, I would, you know, obviously I'd bump Russell up higher.
14:19 And I might even, what I often do is say, look, any description, any list of the top
14:25 10, and even the top five, you got to start with the three centers.
14:29 You got to start with them.
14:30 And then you go from there.
14:31 And you got to start with Russell, Wilton, Kareem, and then you draw a line and you go
14:36 from there because their job description is completely different than the other players.
14:39 That's very different.
14:40 You know, their job description is completely different.
14:44 And then you got LeBron and Mads and Michael as four or five.
14:47 And then the Larry, Larry, Magic, Magic, Larry are next and then Duncan.
14:52 And then we can start arguing because I'm not allowing for any, any dispute about who
14:56 the top eight are.
14:57 What would you say, what would you say to play devil's advocate because of the championships
15:04 he won because of the way he played the game?
15:08 And quite frankly, he was the franchise.
15:12 What would you say if someone wanted to argue Duncan above Magic and Larry?

15:49 Visit FanDuel.com/Boston.
15:51 Kick off the NFL season with an offer you won't want to miss.
15:55 FanDuel, official partner of the NFL.
16:04 I would not dismiss that person as a fool at all.
16:09 I would respect that, that, uh, reasoning.
16:15 And I would just say, okay, and now it's not, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world,
16:18 but, uh, um, I think that those two guys, their impact was, well, the impact, forget
16:26 it.
16:27 I mean, look, he won more than Larry and we went three, um, you know, and that would be
16:34 an interesting argument, but he's worthy of the discussion.
16:37 I'm not going to dismiss anybody.
16:39 I never would have thought of it until you mentioned it.
16:42 Like when you mentioned, when you mentioned Larry Duncan, that's the first time I ever
16:46 thought of it.
16:47 Obviously Duncan got hurt because he was playing in San Antonio.
16:49 I mean, if he had been in New York and LA, you know, I think, and also he was not, he's
16:53 a very private person.
16:55 I mean, Duncan was not doing the endorsements.
16:57 He wasn't, I mean, he wasn't doing the whole commercial thing, you know, the way, uh, well,
17:02 the way Larry did and Magic did quite frankly.
17:05 Um, but I think that, um, your point about Magic and Larry, uh, and I don't know if this
17:12 enters into the qualification, but at the time, as we remember, the NBA was on tape
17:18 delay, you know, so you needed those two.
17:22 I, do you, do you want to go over your bottom the next 10?
17:26 I'll just go, keep going.
17:27 Just because, okay.
17:28 So from, uh, we've got the 20, 21 is Garnett, 22 is Charles, 23 is Carl Malone, 24 is Stockton.
17:37 Interesting.
17:38 They come as a, in the same cluster, which they should.
17:41 Uh, 25 is David Robinson, the Admiral, 26.
17:45 Ah, now I have a soapbox mounting again.
17:49 John Havlicek.
17:50 I'm frankly, I'll get to that.
17:52 27, Isaiah, 28, George Mikan, who last played in 1956 and 29, Chris Paul and 30, Dwayne
18:02 Wade.
18:03 No Dirk?
18:04 Dirk is way back up that top.
18:06 Dirk was 17.
18:07 Okay.
18:08 Sorry.
18:09 Okay.
18:10 Dirk was ahead of the others.
18:12 Now, um, those are all, you know how I feel about Carl Malone and that's Bob Bryant's
18:18 crusade.
18:19 And I don't, I, no one shares, you know, that might disdain for Carl Malone, but it's hard
18:23 to argue against the guy that scored all those points and had a reputation, had a nickname,
18:28 had an aura.
18:30 And I think he's overrated.
18:31 I I'm sorry.
18:32 And I think he owes about, you know, 25% or 50% of points to John Stockton.
18:37 Anyway, I think he was not a clutch player.
18:41 I think that, um, in a sense, I just think he doesn't belong in that list at all in the
18:48 top 30, but I understand that's a high, that is a oddball minority opinion that I harbor
18:54 that I'm out there.
18:56 I'm way out there.
18:57 And no, few people would agree with me.
18:59 The rest of that list.
19:00 Um, the second guy that I think is, I always thought he was a glorified three rather than
19:06 anything else.
19:07 Uh, and yet he's got the rings and, and it's a wonderful fellow and he was a dream teamer
19:14 and that's David Robinson.
19:16 I'm not crazy about David Robinson in this.
19:19 I want to go to dinner with him.
19:22 I want him to babysit my children.
19:24 You know, if I were, you know, had little kids, he's a wonderful, he's a great American
19:29 and he is, he's a tremendous person.
19:32 And as he's doing great things in life right now, that outside of basketball, he's an admiral
19:36 human being.
19:37 I just wouldn't put him in my top three players.
19:39 But that, again, that's a minority.
19:41 That's another distinct minority opinion.
19:44 Um, Mike is historically totally relevant.
19:49 The question isn't whether or not he'd be any good today.
19:52 The technical skills that he possessed, he'd be lucky to be a backup center.
19:56 I'll be honest with that.
19:58 He was a big lumbering, big man who shot hook shots and was a tough guy and was indefensible
20:05 and was responsible for the lane being broadened from six feet to 12 feet, as was Russell and
20:11 Wilk responsible for it going to 16.
20:14 But he was responsible for a very significant rule change because he was so dominant.
20:20 And he was, if you stopped anybody on the street in 1955 and said, name all basketball
20:27 players, one, there'd be two possibilities, George Mikan or Bob Cousy.
20:32 I'll lament Cousy's absence from this list.
20:35 And I'd be happy to replace Dwayne Wade with Cousy for historical reasons.
20:40 You know, but John Havlicek.
20:43 John Havlicek is falling through the cracks of history.
20:46 I'm glad that they acknowledged him at 28.
20:49 I wouldn't have been shocked if they forgot him.
20:52 But I'm going to tell you something right now that I believe firmly, that in the last
20:56 five years, it was roughly from 1968, 69 season on, when Oscar and Jerry, who came into the
21:05 league the same year, by the way, 1960.
21:07 So they're now entering the second, the last, you know, the more declining phase of their
21:13 careers.
21:14 It's still very good.
21:15 John Havlicek was better than them from that point on until he retired, until they retired,
21:21 respectively in '73 and '75.
21:24 He was better than them.
21:27 And he guarded both of them.
21:28 He played two positions, which they didn't.
21:30 He guarded both of them.
21:33 He did everything.
21:35 And John Havlicek's a top-rung player, frankly.
21:39 >> Well, I think if Oscar's there, Pondo's got to be there.
21:42 >> Right.
21:43 He's right in that cluster.
21:44 He's in that cluster.
21:45 >> Yeah, I mean, I mean -- >> It's not -- So, but believe me, I'm grateful
21:52 that these people, this -- I don't know who the voting body was, but I probably could
21:58 find out.
21:59 I shouldn't find out.
22:00 But I'm grateful that they at least acknowledged him to that degree.
22:03 But overall, Gary, I'm pleasantly surprised.
22:07 >> Not bad.
22:08 Not bad.
22:09 >> The quality of this.
22:10 And we're all going to have our individual foibles or our individual preferences, our
22:14 individual, you know, likes and dislikes.
22:17 And not everybody's going to agree with me.
22:19 And I'm sure there's somebody out there that has targeted someone, as I had targeted Carl
22:24 Malone, and will say, "Please, stop it," you know.
22:27 And that's fine.
22:29 But overall, it's a good conversational list.
22:32 I think it's interesting, you know, when you think about how things evolve and will evolve.
22:38 Obviously, there were three contemporary players you could go see tomorrow night that they
22:42 were playing on this list, LeBron, Durant, and Giannis.
22:45 Giannis is by far the youngest.
22:48 He's not 30 yet.
22:50 And how far up the list he might move if he continues to put this level, he'd have to
22:56 move up the list.
22:57 >> Right.
22:58 Yeah.
22:59 I mean, I don't see -- >> He may -- Giannis Antetokounmpo might move
23:03 up into the top 10 discussion, historically, if he keeps playing like this.
23:07 And the second guy, of course, is another where Djokic is going to wind up.
23:13 And Embiid, who I defend, if Embiid is going to continue to play like this, you're not
23:20 going to keep him out of any top 30, historically, as time goes on.
23:25 But these things always -- people have to fall out, you know?
23:27 I mean, I've lived through the 25th anniversary NBA team, the 50th anniversary NBA team, and
23:34 I voted for the 50th and the 75th.
23:37 And I'm proud to say that.
23:38 And, you know, and people have to -- sadly, people have to be displaced by newcomers.
23:44 It's going to happen.
23:45 But I predict that if we do this list in five years, Giannis, if he continues to play like
23:50 this, will be in that discussion, you know, 9, 10, 11, 12.
23:54 >> Yeah, I agree.
23:55 And you know why the list is put together, so we'll debate.
23:59 >> Well, that's the fun about this.
24:02 You're always going to piss somebody off.
24:04 You're always going to -- >> Oh, come on.
24:06 It's all about clicks, Bob.
24:07 It's all about clicks.
24:08 >> No, no, no.
24:09 It's like -- I listen -- I'm a big fan of Sirius XM, you know?
24:13 And they like to do voter lists of songs, top songs.
24:19 And some of them drive me crazy.
24:24 Like they did a Beatles list, you know?
24:25 And my favorite Beatles song, the first time they did it, it came in at like 65.
24:30 And that's things we said today, you know?
24:33 And I can't -- what kind of idiot people are these out there?
24:36 But anyway, but that's me.
24:39 And we all have our -- >> Well, Bob, I was going to ask you this
24:43 when we stop recording, but I'm going to just keep recording because I just legitimately
24:48 want to know.
24:50 Sunday is a really big day.
24:52 And depending upon when you've watched this, we're recording this before the Sunday Eagles
24:57 game and Brady coming back.
25:00 And I want to get two thoughts.
25:02 And I think people -- I want to go to football because I think people want to know what you
25:06 think about this because I want to know what you think about this.
25:09 First of all, just your thoughts on Brady coming back home and just kind of put a bow
25:16 on that.
25:17 And then secondly, is this it for Belichick?
25:22 >> I'm very pleased that Brady will come back in a completely celebratory manner and hope
25:27 we get the kind of welcome that -- equivalent of what Bill Russell -- they finally got around
25:32 to doing in 1999 with that tribute at the Garden of Bill Russell, which was trying to
25:38 make up for a lot of past wrongs, if you will, by not paying the proper homage to that person.
25:45 You can't thank Brady enough.
25:49 And I mean you.
25:50 You start with the owner.
25:53 You go to the coach, the one coach that he played for in New England.
25:57 You go to the media.
25:59 You go to the fans, all of us.
26:01 We can't thank him enough.
26:02 We can't thank him enough for what he gave us.
26:04 And there's no question he was as influential in a team's success at sport over a period
26:10 of time as anyone ever was.
26:13 You can argue he was number one, just for the sheer legitimacy of it all.
26:15 Your first championship coming in 2002 and your last coming in 2019.
26:19 There's never been anything like that in the history of the NFL.
26:22 And I think if we span other sports, we will find that 17-year gap will be a record.
26:32 I can't imagine.
26:35 So anyway, it's been a lot.
26:38 And he's never been on the news for the wrong reasons.
26:41 I mean, you may disagree with...
26:43 No, I mean, he's...
26:47 I'm happy to see him back.
26:48 I applaud it.
26:49 And I think it's going to be a good day.
26:52 As far as...
26:53 I'm worried about the team, though.
26:55 I think they're going to get shellacked.
26:56 Well, the team, they're going up against the Super Bowl, you know, the entry from the NFC.
27:03 On paper, still, are they not the consensus favorite in the NFC?
27:07 They got the great...
27:08 The new flavor of the month they have, it would deal in hertz.
27:14 And it's nice to see him come to our environment.
27:16 You know, yeah, they may...
27:20 It's going to be a real test.
27:22 This is like instead of getting a quiz, they're getting a final exam on opening day.
27:27 Yeah, I mean, but do you think Belichick has lost it?
27:30 Do you think coaching-wise, when it comes to the coaching and the front office of the
27:37 Patriots, have they lost their fastball?
27:40 Because I'm beginning to...
27:42 There's rumblings that this may be it.
27:45 And I think Robert was wanting him to get the Lombardi record.
27:48 I don't think it's going to happen.
27:51 I think the Belichick administration, and of course, he is arguably the greatest coach
27:55 of all time, I think the Belichick administration is at the crossroads here, big time.
28:00 I do, too.
28:01 And I think people are closing in on him in that regard.
28:04 And this is where, see, he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt that he deserves, maybe,
28:11 but some people... because now all that standoffishness, all that imperial behavior, all that condescension
28:19 could come back to haunt him once you're not producing the way people think you should.
28:24 And the thing is, there's two entities here.
28:28 It's the grocery shopper versus the cook.
28:34 And we still think...
28:35 I think we have faith in the cook.
28:38 It's the grocery shopping part of him that...
28:40 And thank you, Bill Parcells, for that analogy, by the way.
28:42 It's a wonderful thing.
28:43 I love it.
28:44 Because that's where we got that from Bill Parcells.
28:47 And Belichick's grocery shopping has been very suspect in those three years.
28:53 And it is him.
28:54 He has to find...
28:55 I don't care what personnel director, I don't care if it's Pioli, I don't care who it is.
29:00 Nothing happens without Bill Saison.
29:02 And hey, this is the menu that he's provided.
29:06 This is the meal he's provided.
29:08 And he's got the ingredients.
29:09 I mean, he's got to go cook it up.
29:11 And we'll see.
29:13 So I think it's not the coaching, the game coaching.
29:16 I don't think people question that so much as much.
29:19 Maybe I'm wrong.
29:20 Maybe they are more than I realize.
29:21 I think it's the team, the players, who are these guys?
29:25 And how's he put together this team?
29:28 So I think that's it.
29:30 But he still ultimately has a constituency of one.
29:33 You know that.
29:34 >>RAOUL PAL: Right.
29:35 >>GREGORY PAPA: And I can't see him bailing.
29:38 I think he's probably...
29:39 Bob Kraft may...
29:40 Now, this is rant speculation.
29:42 He may be, as you already alluded, hoping that Bill would ease himself out so that there's
29:47 no need ever to shove him, that he will walk out of the building and not get shoved off
29:54 the ledge.
29:55 That would be horrible.
29:56 >>RAOUL PAL: Well, you know something, Bob, as we wrap it up, because the sun is setting
30:01 behind you.
30:04 He's not...
30:05 That's not going to happen.
30:06 You know that as well as I do.
30:07 He'll coach...
30:08 He's what, 72, 73?
30:09 It's never going to happen.
30:10 >>GREGORY PAPA: To the best of my knowledge, what I'm about to say remains true.
30:15 I know it's been true for the whole time he's here.
30:17 He still loves every aspect of his job.
30:19 >>RAOUL PAL: He does.
30:20 And that's my...
30:21 >>GREGORY PAPA: He loves the entire 12 months of his job.
30:23 He even likes preparing for this rant.
30:25 He loves to go to the senior bowl.
30:27 He loves to look at the film.
30:28 He loves that.
30:29 He loves OTAs.
30:30 He loves practice.
30:31 He loves Sunday.
30:32 He loves Thursday night.
30:33 He loves Saturday.
30:34 And whatever day they give him to play, Monday night, he loves the games.
30:38 He likes everything.
30:39 And that includes...
30:40 And he doesn't even mind...
30:41 I think he has fun with the meeting.
30:44 My premise has always been that that's his personal amusement, is to mess with the meeting.
30:51 >>RAOUL PAL: Well, from what I read, he's single now, so what else does he have to do?
30:57 So just, unfortunately, I don't think it's going to end well, which is really too bad,
31:02 because that guy should be sent out...
31:07 He should be given a hero's soiree.
31:10 And unfortunately, I don't think it's going to happen.
31:12 Bob, enjoy the lake.
31:13 >>BOB RYAN, JR.: We shall.
31:14 >>RAOUL PAL: All right, Bob Ryan, brought to you...
