The National Geographic, one of the most respected journals in the world, was duped by an extraordinary deception. It announced that it had a huge scoop, because it had discovered one of the most sought-after fossils in all history, half-bird, half-dinosaur. It seemed to prove one of the most controversial theories in paleontology, that dinosaurs had evolved into birds. Eminent scientists appeared to authenticate the fossil, but all was not what it seemed. It was, in fact, a chimera of two separate fossils. However, even after being exposed, it would actually help further solidify the connection between birds and dinosaurs.
