NEWS: Prasarana needs to relook model, says Loke

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook wants public transport operator Prasarana to change its operating model. Details in this week’s edition of The Edge.

00:00 When I took over, one of the things that I told Prasarana is that you have to utilise,

00:05 I said, in terms of your asset.

00:09 And I want them to also look at changing the approach of how to utilise assets.

00:18 I mean, previously a lot of funds are being used, I mean for buses for example, they procure

00:25 new buses.

00:26 But procuring new buses sometimes is not the best way in terms of utilising the asset.

00:31 So I am suggesting and advocating to them to look at other models.

00:36 Number one, you can have lease model.

00:39 So lease model is probably a better option because you know how much you are spending

00:45 and that comes with maintenance.

00:49 So you have a certainty in terms of the lifespan of the bus.

00:53 And secondly, I also ask them to also look at outsourcing some of the routes to other

01:00 network operators.

01:01 So you don't have to run everything yourself.

01:04 So even in Klang Valley right now, Prasarana is undertaking this approach and they are

01:11 tendering out right now, they are asking for proposals for any bus operators to take over

01:17 certain routes.

01:18 They are private operators but they will have to run under rapid.
