A former Birmingham City Council adviser criticised hosting the Commonwealth Games for its financial legacy, calling it a "challenge too far" for the council currently facing difficulties. This week, the council declared insolvency due to a £760 million equal pay claims bill, resulting in an £87 million budget deficit.

West Midlands mayor Andy Street has announced the purchase of 860+ tonnes of UK-made steel for the Metro tram network expansion. He endorsed a charter promoting UK steel use in major projects during the
