00:00 YouTubers Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla have finally gotten back together to revive and
00:04 revamp Smosh, but how did their career on YouTube begin?
00:12 In the age of the internet, digital creators come and go, but there are a few select creators
00:16 that started early and have managed to keep their following to this day.
00:20 YouTube sensation Smosh is a group of these creators.
00:23 The first video Smosh made was uploaded to their website on August 14, 2005, and was
00:29 titled "Power Rangers Theme."
00:35 YouTube's popularity was still in question at the time, as the website launched the same
00:43 year Smosh posted their first video.
00:45 Hecox and Padilla were only 18 years old.
00:48 However, the boys' quirky humor appealed to the younger generation, and they quickly
00:52 found themselves an audience.
00:54 While most of Smosh's early content was lip-syncing and quick skits, they soon graduated to larger,
00:59 more developed videos.
01:01 The video that shot Smosh into the spotlight was posted on November 28, 2005, and titled
01:06 "Pokemon Theme Music Video."
01:08 They battled with other channels over the years, but held the spot for the most subscribed
01:12 channel on YouTube multiple times.
01:14 Their subscriber count only continued to grow, so Padilla and Hecox began looking to expand
01:19 Smosh and its content.
01:20 In 2011, Hecox and Padilla sold Smosh to the now-extinct Defy Media, hoping it would be
01:26 the way to achieve the growth they wanted.
01:28 Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out that way.
01:31 Anthony Padilla left Smosh in 2017 due to creative differences with Defy Media.
01:36 As the parent company filed for bankruptcy, YouTube veterans Rhett and Link, who run Good
01:40 Mythical Morning, bought Smosh in order to save it in 2019.
01:44 But in 2023, Ian and Anthony got back together, and after reconnecting and talking about missing
01:49 their sketch comedy roots, they bought back Smosh.
01:52 What's Trending got to talk to both Anthony and Ian at the 2023 Streamy Awards, and they
01:57 shared their plans for Smosh almost a decade after its creation.
02:01 "We want to honor the people that have grown up watching Smosh, but we also want to create
02:08 content for new audiences as well.
02:10 So it's kind of this fun balance of giving something to the long-time viewers and then
02:16 trying to create something new."
02:19 So whether audiences grew up watching Smosh or are now discovering them in 2023, there
02:23 will be something for everyone as Ian and Anthony take over again.
