Susanne Vielmetter is director of Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects. Here she presents the work of the artist Jane South, who is making complex sculptures of paper. VernissageTV visited the gallery’s booth at the opening of Art Cologne, 2005.

00:00 My name is Susanne Wielmetter. I own the Susanne Wielmetter Los Angeles Project Gallery.

00:05 The gallery is in Los Angeles and I mostly show artists from LA,

00:10 sometimes also European artists.

00:15 So this artist, her name is Jane South and she's originally from London, lives in Brooklyn

00:20 and I've done a project and very recently a solo show with her.

00:26 And so the work that you see here is made of paper.

00:30 It's a kind of archival, very thin cardboard paper. It's all cut by hand.

00:37 And it's more stable than it looks.

00:42 Each element is constructed similar to a kind of heavy-duty industrial steel container.

00:53 And of course this is the kind of material that the work mimics, but then it's made of paper.

01:01 So that's the kind of contrast there.

01:04 And for instance, even the hooks, the little paper hooks that you see, they're made of paper.

01:12 And so the material is first painted with an acrylic paint and then she draws on top of the paint.

01:20 So you can see there's a very elaborate drawing technique.

01:25 And then the spaces in between are cut out by hand.

01:28 So everything is handmade. She doesn't have any assistants. It's quite labor-intensive.

01:36 And so the way this work is arranged is compared to other pieces that she's done.

01:42 It's a little bit spread out. It has its own rhythm.

01:48 And then of course the shadows, the way the shadows play on the wall, is a kind of important element of the work.
