Only Fools and Horses super-fan has funeral themed after beloved comedy

An Only Fools and Horses superfan had a funeral based on the show – complete with the Trotter's trademark three-wheel van.

Derek Mavir, 84, who was nicknamed 'Del-Boy,' loved the comedy classic and sharing the name with David Jason’s lead character.

After he passed away on June 29, his family wanted to pay the ultimate tribute to their beloved dad and grandad so arranged for a replica of the yellow Reliant Regal to join the funeral procession.

The iconic van blasted the show’s theme tune as it led the way on August 29. His family also managed to get a flower replica to go over Derek’s grave.

Derek, from Grantham, worked hard as a farmer in his younger years but would always find time to binge-watch episodes of the BBC series.

His granddaughter Katie Harvey, 39, said her late grandad was nicknamed Del Boy by family and friends and they even got a flower-shaped Derek Trotter to go on top of his grave.

Mum-of-four Katie said: “Del Boy was his favourite, he was a bit of a Del Boy himself. He was funny and very cheeky.

“He was quite short, just like Del Boy.

“He loved the show, I think it was the humour of it, there was quite a bit of humour in there. Del Boy reminded him of himself when growing up.

“In the early years he did watch it quite a bit. He used to go out and about. He was always sat in the local mobility shop. He became family. He started off as a customer. He bought his first mobility scooter.

“He used to always like cars so when he lost his license due to age, he went for one of those.

“Me and my younger brother Ethan were sat in my mum's kitchen and we were trying to think of things to put smiles on people faces, he always loved to do that.

“I did look into doing the hearse as well but we just decided on the car. The hearse was nice, but the flowers wouldn’t be able to go with him.

“You wouldn’t be able to see grandad.”

Katie said her grandad Derek would’ve loved the family’s tribute to him.

She added: “He was nicknamed Del Boy, mum’s friends always called him Del Boy. With his second scooter he had it pimped out with Del Boy stickers.

“He would’ve been smiling.

“His most recent job was farmer, he loved working in the fields. He used to go and plough. He loved farming and his garden.

“Some people have said the van put a smile on their faces.”
