Vincent Kompany speaks on transfer window deadline day

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany spoke to the media ahead of the summer transfer window closing on 1st September.

00:07 There's the short-term needs that are always the priority, but then as well the long-term needs for the club.

00:13 I think we've done a good job in terms of recruiting players that the club can look forward to building on.

00:24 We had a little bit of a scare with the injury of Egdal and Vitinho, so we were looking out for that.

00:30 But if it's not too bad, then I think we're just going to bring in players that can either strengthen us directly

00:38 or players that can come and support for the future.

00:41 But it's got to be those extremes.

00:45 We don't control when other clubs make their players available.

00:48 So if a player is available, then we'll always look into it.

00:51 I've always said it, any player, I think it's in any club, but I don't know if everybody wants to say it that way,

00:59 but you're always competing with every player in the world that's available to the club that you're playing for.

01:06 Because you always have a duty as a manager and as a club to make the team the best you can.

01:13 We do have leadership in the group, maybe not the type that comes to mind when you just observe the squad,

01:25 but we do have experienced players, we do have leadership in the group.

01:29 I think as well, what you've got to make sure is that you don't have a fetish about experience and leadership,

01:37 because there's plenty of experienced players that went down last season and the season before that.

01:42 So for us, it's a case of having the right profiles first and foremost, and attaching the character to it.

01:50 It's always something that we're looking out for, definitely.

01:54 At this moment in time, if you look at my phone whilst we're speaking, I'll probably get pinged 15 players at the moment.

02:01 It's closer to what you experience if you go to the markets in Marrakech than what you think it is.

02:11 That's how the market behaves more than anything.

02:14 We try and stay calm and consistent and have a deliberate plan of action, but it just changes constantly at the moment.

02:24 There's been talk of a lot of players coming in, but is there any chance of players leaving before the deadline tomorrow night?

02:29 It's not something we've discussed at this moment in time.

02:32 As well, you have to look at our situation from last season.

02:35 We lost six lone players. To replace those lone players, let's say whatever the Premier League fees for a normal standard,

02:43 you see them going through on Sky every single day, what's the value of a Premier League player nowadays,

02:47 especially if it's a starting player?

02:49 Of these six, maybe four or five of them were starting players for us last season.

02:53 So first we had to spend to replace them to get to the same level as last season,

02:58 and then we had to spend to improve on the squad that we had last season.

03:02 So it's only normal for us that we're still looking to make this squad a Premier League squad.
