Nordstrom Closes Its , San Francisco Flagship Store.
The retailer's five-story store in
San Francisco was shut down on Aug. 27
after 35 years in business, CNN reports. .
The closure was announced in May,
with Nordstrom saying the , "dynamics of the downtown San Francisco
market have changed dramatically over the past
several years, impacting customer foot traffic to our
stores and our ability to operate successfully.".
Shoppers described losing the "anchor in
San Francisco" as a "sad day," CNN reports. .
Last month, a Nordstrom Rack in the
San Francisco area closed as well. .
In June of this year, mall operator
Westfield announced it would no longer control the San Francisco Centre mall that
it had operated for over 20 years.
Westfield cited "challenging operating conditions
in downtown San Francisco, which have led to declines in sales, occupancy and foot traffic.".
Big chains such as Whole Foods, Anthropologie and Office Depot have also halted operations in downtown San Francisco since the beginning of the pandemic. .

Since 2020, over 39 stores have shut down in the city's Union Square, according to
market research firm Coresight.
Despite retail issues in the area, Ikea opened a 52,000-square-foot store in San Francisco last week. .
City leaders hope that the three-level store will bring shoppers back to the downtown area and help to support other businesses.
