Ipswich Town 3-4 Leeds United - YEP reaction from a seven-goal thriller at Portman Road

00:00 Good afternoon, good evening. Welcome to the Yorkshire Evening Post's verdict on Leeds

00:06 United's win in the seven-goal thriller at Portman Road this afternoon. It was a 4-3

00:13 game, Leeds United winning that one, the first win in the league under Daniel Farker, and

00:19 it couldn't come a moment too soon. A real entertaining contest today in Suffolk, and

00:29 hopefully the turning point for the rest of the campaign. Up until now, Leeds have found

00:35 it difficult to find those wins. They've dug in and remained in games, like they did against

00:40 Cardiff and West Bromwich Albion at Ellon Road, but now they've finally got that monkey

00:45 off their back and got that victory. In some style as well, scoring four goals. We'll start

00:51 with the team news that came out this afternoon. Willy Nyonto, Luis Sinisterra, both in the

01:00 starting line-up, as well as new signing, £12m striker Joel Pirro, who signed from

01:05 Swansea on Thursday evening. He was straight into the fold, playing just behind Eugenio

01:10 Ruta and flanked by Nyonto and Sinisterra. A really, really good attacking performance

01:19 today, really entertaining, really cohesive. It felt as though they were really all singing

01:26 from the same hymn sheet. As a result, all four of those attackers scored. Ruta getting

01:32 the first after Ipswich had opened the scoring, an own goal from Joe Rodan in the seventh

01:39 or eighth minute. Ruta immediately hit back, a real good solo effort, spinning away from

01:43 trouble and then forcing his way into the penalty area, showcasing that excellent dribbling

01:48 ability that he does possess. Then, within four minutes, it was 2-1. Leeds were in front

01:55 for the first time today. Willy Nyonto gambling at the back post on a cross that Sam Byram

02:02 had swung in. Then five minutes after that, it was 3-1. Archie Gray pinging a lovely,

02:08 lovely cross-field pass to Luis Sinisterra on the left-hand side. Sinisterra cutting

02:14 inside, hitting the target. The ball is spilled into the centre of the penalty box and Joel

02:20 Pirro is on hand to turn that one into the back of the net. After 20 minutes, Leeds were

02:26 3-1 up. I wouldn't say cruising because Ipswich did carry a threat throughout the game and

02:32 were very... They seemed like a team who'd been promoted or playing with full of momentum,

02:39 full of confidence. After that, the game went to 3-2 on the stroke of half-time. Cody Drama

02:50 getting in a mix with Elam Melieh and Joe Roden. A few opportunities there to clear

02:55 the ball but Leeds didn't. Then Melieh was left in no-man's land as Ipswich came and

03:02 cut the ball back from the by-line for Nathan Broadhead to fire in. So, 3-2 at half-time,

03:07 five goals at the break. It was a really hectic first half. Second half, I'd say Ipswich probably

03:13 had the better of it. But it was the 75th minute when Leeds went and restored their

03:20 two-goal lead. Luis Sinisterra making a run down the left-hand side. Jamie Shackleton

03:25 who came on at half-time. He threaded through a lovely, lovely pass to Sinisterra. The way

03:33 he brushes off Brandon Williams and tucks it away is probably the best way to describe

03:40 it. Tucks it away into the bottom of Vaklav Hladky's net. That was 4-2. Conor Chaplin

03:46 did get one back in stoppage time right at the end of the game for Ipswich to finish

03:50 the game as 4-3. But the real talking points from today were just how well-staffed that

03:58 attack was. You look at previous games where Leeds maybe haven't had an attacking arsenal

04:03 which has been really exciting. Today it was and they were all firing on all cylinders.

04:08 As I say, all four of that front four scoring, finding the back of the net. The big news

04:15 was obviously that Willy Nyonto and Sinisterra came back into the team. Sinisterra and Nyonto

04:20 having trained individually over the past couple of weeks due to contractual issues

04:25 in Sinisterra's case and the transfer request that Willy Nyonto submitted last Friday. But

04:32 I guess it just goes to show that seven days or eight days can be a very, very long time

04:36 in football because Nyonto played the 90 minutes today, he was engaged, he got his goal. Sinisterra

04:45 as well, I think he played fantastically well today, probably my man of the match. So it

04:51 will be interesting to see what happens over the next five or six days until the transfer

04:55 window closes because if Leeds are able to retain that front four and you'd like to think

05:02 that obviously Pirro will be staying, he's only just got his foot into the building,

05:07 Routier is going to stay. If they're able to keep Nyonto, if they're able to keep Sinisterra,

05:14 then that is a really, really strong attack. As they showed today, this is a team, Ipswich,

05:19 who at home have been very, very resolute. They've been a very, very good team and Leeds

05:25 scored three times in nine minutes and made it look like light work. So there's definitely

05:30 optimism to be had there. Leeds up to 12th in the championship table, which again at

05:37 this stage means very little, but there is plenty to be optimistic about given that the

05:43 first win is on the board. We go now to Salford in the Cup on Tuesday at the Peninsula Stadium.

05:53 There will be, I'm sure, a fully sold out allocation there from Leeds fans who were

05:58 in fine voice this afternoon. On the Nyonto issue, there were a few smatterings of boos

06:04 when he got on the ball in the first half, but it was very much in the minority. It wasn't

06:08 wholesale. Sinisterra, he was given a standing ovation as he was substituted in the second

06:17 half. Daniel Farke was keen not to say that the club had turned a corner because he was

06:23 aware that another sucker punch could be waiting for him around the next corner. He did describe

06:29 Sam Byram's injury in the first half as a sucker punch. He went off with an adductor

06:35 issue Farke said. There are more things to be positive about after this afternoon's game

06:42 than in previous weeks. Four goals, attacking players scoring and things are certainly looking
