00:00 The king of romance is set to return to the Philippines next month.
00:03 Legendary British crooner Engelbert Humperdinck will serenade his Filipino fans once again
00:09 in several concerts happening at the Newport Performing Arts Theatre.
00:12 That will be on September 9 and 10 and in Naga City on September 12.
00:16 Engelbert joins us now live via Zoom.
00:19 Hello and welcome to New Day, the Philippines.
00:22 Welcome.
00:23 Hello, I'm looking forward to coming over.
00:26 I really am.
00:27 It's been four years so I'm a little bit excited about coming over there.
00:34 Well, we are excited as well.
00:37 I mean, the Filipinos have once again the chance to witness a legendary performance.
00:42 And lucky for us, you are so busy.
00:46 You are touring the US and whatnot.
00:49 And we're happy that you decided to include Manila as part of your world tour.
00:55 Well, I'm always on a world tour, Christine.
00:59 You know, and this show that I'm bringing, I know the Filipino people love music.
01:06 And I know that for a fact because I get online and I watch them sing some of my songs on
01:11 karaoke.
01:13 So anyway, I'm coming, bringing all my standards there and some new material.
01:18 And it's an exciting moment for me and I hope it will be for you all there.
01:23 Well, I mean, speaking of your set list, OK, we do have our fan favorites.
01:27 I mean, we have it's on karaoke.
01:29 It's on repeat and karaoke.
01:32 But how do you choose for your set list of, you know, all the songs that, of course, we
01:37 love as well?
01:38 Well, I'll tell you what, it's a sort of a trial and trial and tested routine.
01:43 You know, I take the show all over the world and I try out all my songs and whichever one
01:48 works, I keep in the show, you know.
01:51 But at this moment in time, I'm bringing some new songs from my new album and I have a little
01:57 surprise for when I come there, you know, a little surprise.
02:00 Not saying anything yet, but I do have a little surprise for the Filipino people when I get
02:04 there.
02:05 OK, and your new album is all about love.
02:08 Tell me a little bit about that.
02:09 It is.
02:10 Yes, it is.
02:11 And I'll be doing tracks from there, too, you know.
02:14 Besides all my big hits like "Release Me" and "Last Walk" and "Le Bessie Cliff" of
02:18 the Bellsides, you know.
02:21 How does one reinvent such a classic and timeless hit and make it your own?
02:30 Well, God has been good to me and the kind of music that I record seems to be timeless
02:37 and it's as fresh today as I recorded it, you know, in the past.
02:42 And I don't get tired of singing them.
02:45 I never get tired, especially the first song that I recorded was "Release Me" and it stopped
02:50 the Beatles from going to number one.
02:52 And this poor, this unknown person stopped the almighty Beatles who by a door, you know,
02:57 go into number one.
02:59 And I'll be singing that song when I get there, too.
03:01 I mean, let's talk about "Release Me".
03:04 I mean, that pretty much catapulted you to where you are now.
03:09 You were known because of that song.
03:10 It is in the Guinness Book of World Records.
03:13 You were what, 56 consecutive weeks, number one in 11 countries with just one song.
03:22 Just that one.
03:23 I got lucky.
03:24 I really got lucky.
03:25 And it doesn't happen in today's world.
03:27 You know, so I came into the show business at the right time and it was just a magical
03:35 song for me.
03:36 And it's kept me in show business all this time.
03:39 And it's been, music has been my passport to the world and it's given, made me see countries
03:45 I've never seen before in my life.
03:47 And it's just a wonderful, wonderful way of making a living.
03:52 I mean, you, okay, you mentioned already the Beatles.
03:55 You were performing with them.
03:56 You performed with Three Degrees.
03:58 You performed with Elvis Presley.
04:00 You are 87 years old.
04:03 You are four-time Grammy nominee, sold over 150 million records.
04:07 And I could go on and on.
04:09 And to this day, you're still touring the world.
04:13 You're still releasing albums.
04:16 You are actually in music, in films now, and Netflix.
04:20 I mean, you know, you must have some incredible secret.
04:25 What is it?
04:26 Your secret to all of the success?
04:27 Well, I just don't want to get...
04:28 Go ahead.
04:29 I don't want to give it up.
04:31 I don't want to give it up.
04:32 I don't, I don't...
04:34 Following is not a word that I use.
04:38 As a matter of fact, I've got such a great following that I don't want to let them down.
04:42 You know, wherever I go, I get such a great reception.
04:47 And I'm really thrilled with the kind of music that I record.
04:52 They love it.
04:53 And the people come in, just adorable.
04:55 They're wonderful people.
04:57 Well, it seems like you've done it all.
05:00 Is there anything else that you still want to do at this point in your career?
05:04 A different type of music that you want to make or go a different part of the world that
05:09 you have never been to?
05:10 Yes, I have some surprises in the box and it's coming up.
05:16 I can't talk about it because it's brand new.
05:18 And as a matter of fact, I was doing a little bit of rehearsing today about that.
05:22 And it's going to happen within the next two, three months.
05:26 So I'm working on it.
05:28 It's a brand new project.
05:30 Okay.
05:31 Well, we hope to have you back on the show two or three months to talk more about it.
05:35 Thank you so much for being with us.
05:37 And you know, we can't wait to have you here in the Philippines, September 9 and 10.
05:40 And of course, in Naga, you're going to be visiting them as well.
05:43 September 12.
05:44 There you go.
05:45 We're just going to keep singing your songs all morning.
05:47 Thank you so much.
05:48 Thank you for joining us.
05:49 Thank you so much.
05:50 Indeed.
05:51 God bless you all.
05:52 Thank you.
05:53 Thank you.
05:53 Thank you.
