00:26 There was a public health crisis in Paris in the late 18th century.

00:31 Cemeteries were overflowing and corpses often wound up on the streets.

00:36 In 1809, the former limestone tunnels that ran beneath the streets were opened to the

00:41 public as the Paris Municipal Ossuary.

00:45 Over the years, the ossuary became the resting place for many illustrious individuals.

00:51 Laid out in geometrical patterns and shapes, the catacombs have fascinated visitors since

00:56 their discovery.

00:58 Sculptures by quarrymen can also be found in these tunnels.
