00:05 How would you say the relationship between Imani

00:08 and Kamal reflect that modern day love story, if you will?

00:14 I think-- because that's what it is.

00:15 And it's really relatable.

00:17 I think most importantly, not only do it reflect,

00:19 but it also--

00:21 I feel like it's a new lens on the younger generation,

00:23 you know, because we're in a lot more of a prideful generation,

00:27 a lot more of a bit of a toxic generation,

00:30 and people not being able to be vulnerable and open up

00:32 and express themselves.

00:34 So I feel like with Kamal and Imani,

00:37 they're able to really hold each other accountable,

00:40 all while knowing that it's not the end of the world.

00:43 I'm upset at you.

00:44 I'm going to hold you accountable.

00:45 But it's not the end of the world.

00:46 We can work through this.

00:47 And the same thing with Kamal is being able to know

00:51 and apologize and to take accountability

00:53 and different things like that.

00:55 So I think that not only is it relatable for our generation,

00:58 but it's also eye opening for the younger generation

01:00 that this is cool, and this is what's in.

01:03 So maybe if you see it on a screen,

01:08 And Sinqua, basketball, of course,

01:10 is a huge theme of the film.

01:12 But another underlying concept is

01:14 the beauty in second chances.

01:16 What did Kamal teach you about not

01:18 being afraid to start over?

01:19 And how do you hope that resonates with viewers?

01:48 and how it's a lesson for the newer generation to say,

01:52 Love is fun.

01:53 And I think also for Black men to say,

01:55 you can-- it's OK to love yourself.

01:57 Because a lot of the times when we first interact with Kamal,

02:00 it's for a lack of loving oneself

02:02 as to why he's so fractured.

02:03 And then throughout the movie, he grows

02:05 to have more love for himself.

02:06 And that's why you see him go on a journey of elevated stature

02:10 by the end of the movie.

02:11 And I think for all of us as humans,

02:13 whatever you see permeating on the outside

02:15 is happening on the inside first.

02:17 I read this really-- this great quote that said,

02:19 whatever's going on is a mirror of what you're feeling.

02:22 And I think that's something for Kamal as well.

02:24 It's like, where we see him grow from

02:26 is because he starts to love himself.

02:28 And the process of getting to know Jeremy

02:30 makes him start to love himself.

02:31 And then he goes-- he reverts back

02:33 to seeing himself for all the love that his wife has for him.

02:37 And that's what you see take him on his journey of success

02:40 at the end of the film.

02:42 Yes, because I love the-- when y'all

02:43 were meditating on the court, I was like,

02:45 y'all better meditate.

02:46 We grew.

02:48 Yes, and another huge thing that this film touched on

02:51 was also support.

02:52 And so in Imani's case, she is super supportive

02:54 of her husband, but she also has her own dreams.

02:57 Are there any qualities of your character

02:59 that also mirror who you are as Tiana Taylor?

03:03 I mean, absolutely.

03:04 I show up for the world, you know?

03:07 And I just-- I'm big on balance.

03:09 You know what I'm saying?

03:10 So it's like-- I think, like I always say, a part of that

03:15 is learning to be a great teammate in life.

03:20 You know, I think that that's the most important sport.

03:23 And that's the sport that I play,

03:24 is being a teammate in life.

03:27 So with being a teammate in life is

03:29 knowing how to show up for others,

03:30 but also making room and time for yourself as well, you know?

03:35 And vice versa, just uplifting one another, being there,

03:38 knowing that it's hard work.

03:40 You know, no sport is easy.

03:42 You know, and with love, love is not easy.

03:46 But it's patient, and it's kind.

03:49 And I think that the patience part is the most underrated.

03:53 You know, and with being a teammate

03:55 comes with patience as well, and understanding, like, OK, cool.

03:57 I might not make the first shot.

03:59 But if I keep going, it'll just--

04:01 it'll come, you know?

04:03 And it'll be more seamless.

04:04 And now you're not thinking about it.

04:06 Your face is different.

04:07 Your body-- the way you're holding your body is different.

04:10 You know what I'm saying?

04:11 So that's how I look at it with that,

04:14 and why, you know, it's like a mirror image,

04:16 is because that's what Imani is.

04:17 She's a great supporter.

04:18 She's a great wife.

04:19 She's a great mom.

04:20 All while, you know, having her own dreams and goals,

04:23 but not necessarily throwing it in anybody's face, you know?

04:27 So like, when she holds Kamal accountable,

04:31 he can take that, because he know, like, damn,

04:32 I really got a real one.

04:34 You know, she has been patient with me,

04:36 and she has been gentle with me.

04:37 So when she do, you know, rough me up a little bit,

04:40 I got to hold that down and take accountability.

04:43 Ability to listen to each other.
