00:09 See on the left, the veteran trainer, Robert Garcia.
00:12 We asked Robert yesterday --
00:14 He always gives very fair assessments --
00:16 Yes. -- of his rising prospects and fringe contenders.
00:19 We said, "All right, Delgado, where is he right now,
00:22 and if he looks good tonight, how far away is he?"
00:25 And it's interesting because with Garcia
00:27 and his boxing academy,
00:29 he has the ability to spar with guys who --
00:31 You can get that answer a little bit right in the gym.
00:34 You know, obviously, Mikey, his brother, is there,
00:36 and you can get work with him, but Jose Ramirez,
00:38 one of his chargers.
00:39 He says that him and Jose Ramirez, they spar often,
00:43 so they're familiar with one another,
00:45 and they probably will never fight
00:46 because they are from the same stable,
00:48 but he says he does extremely well
00:50 against everyone he spars inside the gym.
00:53 Tonight, for Delgado,
00:57 it's gonna be about taking what his opponent gives.
01:00 Valterra is a crafty fighter,
01:02 likes to box off his back foot,
01:04 likes to set up his shots,
01:06 usually over the top with the right hand,
01:08 and you need to shut down a fighter like Valterra
01:12 because if he gains any kind of confidence,
01:15 he can come on strong.
01:16 Valterra we saw back in July of last year
01:19 when he was in against Raymond Murataya.
01:22 Murataya, who was supposed to be on this card,
01:24 but then an injury forced him
01:25 out of his co-feature situation,
01:26 and he was definitely outworked and outclassed
01:29 by Murataya, who many think of as another rising star
01:32 and contender in the weight class,
01:34 and went down in the last round.
01:36 It was 80-71 across all three scorecards in that fight.
01:40 And tonight, for Valterra,
01:42 what it's gonna be about is
01:44 knowing the history of your opponent.
01:47 You know, Valterra, if he did his homework,
01:48 he'll understand that Delgado
01:50 just won 10 rounds for the first time.
01:52 So, it's up to him to push the pace early on.
01:57 The fight on the back end
01:58 is where he needs to step it up even more
02:01 because you wanna keep that doubt
02:03 in the mind of a fighter.
02:04 We have doubts, especially when we're doing something
02:06 for the first time.
02:07 So, he wants to keep that prevalent
02:10 in the mind of Delgado throughout the entire night.
02:13 - Yeah, speaking of doing something for the first time,
02:15 just having a co-main event status
02:18 on a night like this,
02:19 when you have a packed NHL arena
02:21 with a huge world title fight coming up in moments,
02:24 it's more eyeballs, it's more of a share of the spotlight.
02:27 - Yes, it is.
02:28 And more nerves.
02:29 You know, believe it or not,
02:30 Delgado wasn't supposed to be on the main card,
02:33 and he got chosen.
02:34 - That's right.
02:35 - Because Morataya fell out.
02:36 Now, you gotta understand the change of mindset,
02:39 you know, not being on the main card
02:40 and then being almost the opener here,
02:43 the second fight before the main event.
02:45 - Well, what do you remember about that stage of your career?
02:47 I mean, obviously, you went on to be a Hall of Famer.
02:49 But there was a stage of your career where you're coming up,
02:52 and you're not in a co-feature slot.
02:54 You're working your way just to get to
02:56 the main television portion of the card.
02:58 - It's extremely dangerous.
02:59 And it can be because if you're weak-minded
03:02 and you allow the fans or the crowd to,
03:06 let's say, pump you up and do things
03:09 that you normally wouldn't do, you know,
03:11 and the crowd can actually, you know,
03:13 hinder you as well.
03:14 You know, they can take a lot of energy from you.
03:16 So it just depends on the mindset of Delgado.
03:19 And right now, it seems like he's handling it well.
03:21 He's taking his time, and he's absorbing what he needs to absorb,
03:24 and then he's gonna start setting his attack.
03:26 - And a one here.
03:28 - He always looks like this.
03:42 It doesn't matter.
03:43 He just always looks like this.
03:45 - I love these little emotions.
03:47 My favorite topic I got to do
03:50 when I went to Tulsa, Oklahoma,
03:52 was the Larry's Christmas Party.
03:54 That party was absolutely amazing.
03:57 I never expected Tulsa to be such an epic location.
04:01 When I meet my fans, like, they are so wonderful.
04:04 They want to come and dance.
04:05 Like, I--I absolutely love them.
04:07 They're very loyal fans, and they look up to you.
04:10 They do love you.
04:11 - The best part about being a father and daughter
04:14 is basically being--
04:17 [whistle blows]
04:19 - Hey, everybody, make some noise!
04:21 [cheers and applause]
04:24 - We mentioned Delgado when he was 12,
04:32 going to Cuba to learn the Olympic style.
04:35 Meanwhile, Volterra's father was a background
04:37 in electrical and mechanical engineering,
04:40 told his son his future was in boxing,
04:42 encouraged him to turn pro at 16, which he did.
04:45 - He turned pro down in Mexico at 16 years old.
04:47 We asked him even before that, "Well, what got you to the gym?"
04:50 Tim, he said, "Listen--"
04:51 And we've heard this story many times
04:53 when you talk to pro fighters.
04:54 He said, "I was getting bullied as a kid."
04:56 I was getting bullied as a kid.
04:57 In his case, he was overweight.
04:58 Here you have, you know, a smaller-weight class fighter.
05:00 He says, "I was overweight. I was being bullied as a kid."
05:03 So went to the gym,
05:04 and it turned him into the fighter he is today.
05:07 - But a little--a little fat kid is still in him.
05:09 I'm gonna tell you that right now.
05:10 He really is in him, but the difference is
05:12 is that he's a lot thinner now,
05:14 but I'm talking about the toughness.
05:16 That toughness was in that young man,
05:18 but he knows how to fight now.
05:20 That's the difference.
05:22 - There is the world champion, Emmanuel Navarrete,
05:25 the three-division world champion,
05:27 one of nine Mexican fighters to be a three-division champion.
05:32 We have three of them here ringside tonight with us
05:36 as he is getting wrapped up.
05:38 Navarrete getting set to defend his title
05:40 against the former two-division world champion,
05:43 Oscar Valdez.
05:45 It's coming up next.
05:47 There is Valdez.
05:49 He is wrapped.
05:50 He is getting loose in his room.
05:52 Of course, Eddie Reynoso,
05:54 the trainer for Oscar Valdez,
05:57 their ninth fight working together.
05:59 - Oh, no, see it.
06:00 - Reynoso, the longtime trainer for Canelo Alvarez,
06:04 of course, has his fight coming up on September 30th
06:07 against Charlo.
06:08 And it's been interesting to see the evolution
06:10 of Oscar Valdez, Timmy, with Reynoso,
06:12 because the early stages of Valdez,
06:15 when he was fighting in main events
06:17 and thrilling all of us with the action-packed,
06:20 aggressive style,
06:21 he is a more sound, defensive boxer-puncher
06:25 who actually shows up in the top ten now,
06:28 according to CompuBox, in defensive efficiency.
06:31 - Well, he took a page out of Canelo's book, honestly.
06:34 You know, he's basically a relative with Canelo Alvarez.
06:38 He's adopted that high guard usage
06:41 where you're deflecting shots
06:42 and you're letting shots come in,
06:44 so that way you can set up your counter.
06:46 We call that--we call that high guard traps.
06:51 - Double jab by Valterra.
06:54 - The jab is the key for Valterra.
06:57 For Valterra, the jab is the key.
06:59 You know, that keeps your opponent off balance,
07:01 out of rhythm, out of sort.
07:03 - And he has a good jab.
07:04 He steps in behind it, he doubles it sometimes,
07:06 triple it.
07:08 And you see it forces Delgado back,
07:15 making him have to reset his feet.
07:19 - We're gonna take a short break,
07:24 and when we come back,
07:25 we will show you the punch of the night

07:30 who delivered it.
