We asked local east Londoners what they thought about a potential toll charge for the Blackwall Tunnel

A toll charge for the Blackwall tunnel is set to come in to place amid division about the Ultra Low Emission Zone.   Locals give their opinion on yet another charge for driving in the capital, with some for and against.

00:02 I used to use the Dartford Crossing toll charge

00:06 just because I had to work for a scrap car.

00:09 There's a purpose there on that one,

00:10 because obviously not many people use it,

00:13 they have to run it, et cetera,

00:14 but the Blackpool Tunnel itself,

00:16 they're gonna make a lot of money for absolutely no reason.

00:19 The actual, I don't know,

00:20 I think the developments are gonna make no difference,

00:23 and they should be focusing on actually expanding it

00:26 with the funding they have already.

00:29 I'm not a driver, so for me it doesn't really affect me

00:33 on a, from a budget perspective,

00:35 but I'm very happy that they,

00:39 I think it's a good incentive to stop cars going through,

00:43 'cause with the Limehouse cut and with Blackpool Tunnel,

00:48 the air pollution in Tower Hamlets,

00:50 which I know about, is ridiculously high.

00:52 I can see why they need a toll, or want a toll,

00:55 because the traffic's ridiculous,

00:59 but if people need to use the tunnel,

01:01 they need to use the tunnel.

01:03 If they need to get to work,

01:05 and they can't afford the power charge,

01:07 how are they going to get to work?

01:08 What we need is more access.

01:11 - I imagine it will be effective.

01:15 ULess has stopped me from driving my car,

01:18 as often, 'cause I can't afford to,

01:20 and I can't afford to buy a new electric car, if I could.

01:25 So I'm sure it'll probably be effective.

01:27 It's gonna be a bit harsh to do it on those

01:29 that have already purchased an electric car, if I'm honest.

01:33 So yeah, that's what it is.

01:36 - I mean, there is how much the toll is.

01:38 I think there should be more policies

01:41 to reduce the use of private vehicles,

01:44 and favor public transport, sustainable transport,

01:48 whether it's electric buses or cycles.

01:52 So in Tower Hamlets, particular,

01:53 I think there should be more efforts to build cycle lanes,

01:57 and to have affordable options,

01:58 where people are incentivized to use,

02:01 basically, cleaner, safer, mobile modes of transportation.
