00:00
To our SP moms and dads out there, who among you has a picky eater?
00:04
Because I think all of us have gone through that.
00:07
So we really need creative ways to give food to our children.
00:10
And you know one of the most creative ways that have been in, well discovered, not invented
00:15
in the past few years is to "bento baon".
00:20
So we have a couple of parents who shared with us in our Smart Parenting Village about
00:27
the bento baon ideas and one of them is actually a Smart Parenting mom, Ms. Giselle Ona, who's
00:33
going to teach us today, if you want to learn that, "bento baon" styling.
00:39
How is that, Mommy Giselle?
00:40
Let's go!
00:41
Hello Mommy Rica and hello Georgia!
00:43
I'm Mommy Giselle and for today, I'm going to share with you some bento styling tips
00:47
for beginners.
00:48
Generally, there are three tips that I will share with you with regard to bento styling.
00:53
And these are the tips.
00:54
For tip number one, basically you need the tools for bento styling.
00:59
We really have basic tools.
01:01
I have here some cutters.
01:03
And if for example, you only have limited cutters at home, make use of what you have
01:08
at home.
01:09
For instance, the circle.
01:10
If you don't have a circle cutter, use a glass.
01:12
So be resourceful, be creative.
01:14
If you can't find a tip, whatever works for you, do it.
01:18
Aside from the cutters, we also have cups to separate the food items from each other.
01:24
And the colors and shapes you will use are also different.
01:27
Aside from that, we have food picks.
01:30
For others, if you won't use vegetables for adding color to your food, they use these
01:38
barans or dividers.
01:40
Rainbow, and this is what you usually see in sushi.
01:43
And of course, you need your chopping board for cutting the shape.
01:47
If you don't have molders, cling wrap.
01:49
That also works for molding.
01:51
Just mold it by hand so you can work with it.
01:54
So those are the tools that you need for bento style.
01:57
Alright, and most important of all, you need the baonan itself, the lunchbox.
02:02
This has different sizes.
02:04
If your child is a big eater, you stick with something as big as this.
02:09
If for example, he's a small eater or he'll only bring snacks to school, this will do.
02:14
For tip number two, it's very important that you know how to plan the bento lunchbox.
02:21
How are you going to style it?
02:22
But most importantly, it's the one who's going to eat the food that you will prepare, the child.
02:28
And what are his food preferences?
02:29
Is he fond of fruits, vegetables, what in particular?
02:33
He wants you to have a stock of those.
02:35
Aside from the food that you will prepare, what do you need to prepare ahead of time?
02:40
Or for example, the tools.
02:43
Of course, it's important, especially if you have a lot of tools.
02:46
In the morning, you'll put it in your lunchbox. "Oh, I'll make rice meal for my child."
02:51
So, I'll clean this first.
02:53
And then, if he has sauce, I'll put it in his lunchbox.
02:57
Then, you'll put the food in front of you.
03:01
So that when you wake up the next day, when you prepare your food for your child, you can assemble it.
03:05
Okay, last tip, tip number three.
03:07
The keyword here is balance.
03:09
When I speak of balance, we should consider the balance of color, texture of the food,
03:14
also the taste, and the shapes.
03:17
Because that's what makes your bento box interesting and visually appealing.
03:22
This is the food that we'll use for our bento box.
03:25
The Filipino-style barbecue meatballs, we need rice for this.
03:30
And then, when we choose rice for bento making or bento building,
03:34
as much as possible, we should use sticky rice because it forms easily.
03:38
But if you don't have sticky rice, you just make use of your rice molds.
03:43
If you have a rice mold like this, it forms easily.
03:47
So, using the spoon, just fill it up with rice.
03:51
Make sure that there's no empty space so that the cut is well-formed.
03:55
We're actually making a cut right now.
03:57
The ears, the corners.
03:59
If it's already overflowing, I think that's enough.
04:01
Once it's filled up like this, just put it in the slot.
04:04
Using the cover, press it down hard as you can.
04:08
When you lift it, the rice is formed.
04:11
So, this is our cut.
04:13
We'll be using this bento box.
04:16
The good thing about this is that it has a partition.
04:19
There's less space that needs to be filled up.
04:22
Because when you're making bento, as much as possible, don't leave an empty space.
04:27
Otherwise, the food items inside will just keep tumbling.
04:30
Since our rice is color white, we want to make it pop by using something healthy like this lettuce.
04:37
Next would be the typical details that we use using nori.
04:42
So, using the cutter, you'll see that it's serrated.
04:46
So, it's easier to cut the details.
04:48
For the eyes, just press down using your finger.
04:52
This is the nose.
04:55
You just follow the pattern of the details you punched.
05:00
Try to be gentle when you form the shapes.
05:03
Aside from nori, some people use ham or cheese so that the color will be different.
05:09
So, we're done with the rice.
05:12
You have carbs now.
05:13
For the protein, we'll be using our meatballs.
05:19
You can put dividers if you want to have pop of color.
05:22
But if you have a lot of vegetables on hand and you don't really need that, just put it.
05:30
With bento, you have to build it up.
05:32
It can't be flat.
05:34
So, when you put the elements in your lunchbox, it has to be high.
05:40
As I've said, there should be a balance of colors, textures, and shapes.
05:43
I'll be using rectangles.
05:45
And then, that's where you can put the vegetables.
05:48
Tomatoes are also fine.
05:49
Then, you can just put it there later because we have sauce also for our barbecue meatballs.
05:54
We'll just put it here on the side.
05:58
Now, to make it more exciting and appealing, that's when you put small details using the bento picks.
06:06
I already pre-cut this earlier.
06:09
Fish for the cat using carrots.
06:11
I used the slices of carrots from the tool that we used earlier.
06:19
Like what I've said a while ago, it's better if it's full.
06:23
So, for this, I think I'd like to put another color.
06:28
Let's go with a shade of red.
06:30
For the grapes, you can put it just as it is.
06:32
It's also fine if it has shapes, but I'd like to put it just as it is for now.
06:38
Lastly, the bento picks.
06:41
For the meatballs, I'd like to put some ice to it.
06:43
So, there you have it.
06:45
You just put all the elements in and you already have your Filipino-style barbecue meatball demo.
