00:08 When all are ready, they leave together.
00:15 Spy pup tries to follow,
00:22 but it's no match for the agile wolves.

00:31 Spy snowy owl takes up the filming baton.
00:49 It can fly long range and cruise at 15 miles per hour.
00:54 Perfect for tracking wolves on the move.
00:59 (gentle music)
01:01 They have 75,000 square miles to hunt in.
01:09 They head into wind to try to catch a scent.
01:16 Perhaps from prey 20 miles away.
01:21 It's a testing time for such tiny pups.
01:28 To discover what lies ahead,
01:30 our eye in the sky takes the lead.
01:32 Musk ox are prime prey for Arctic wolves.
01:40 Downwind, the wolves are difficult to detect.
01:56 But musk ox are easily spooked.
01:59 So they carefully take up position.
02:07 Selecting the young or infirm.
02:17 But the pups have yet to learn the rules.
02:23 (wolves howling)
02:25 Their covers blown.
02:29 The herd cluster together.
02:34 Forming a protective circle around their calves.
02:46 The wolves surround them.
02:50 (gentle music)
02:52 This time the pups stay still.
02:56 The pack calculates its next move.
03:03 They split the herd.
03:20 As the pups watch and learn.
03:22 They've singled out the oldest animal.
03:26 But a fully grown musk ox weighs 400 kilos
03:33 and can kill a wolf.
03:34 And its thick woolly coat is almost impenetrable.
03:41 Their aim is to tire her out.
03:45 (tense music)
03:48 Those at the front keep the musk ox distracted.
03:57 Those at the back anchor her down.
04:00 (tense music)
04:03 Such battles can last an hour.
04:21 (wolves growling)
04:24 Exhausted, she gives up the fight.
