00:22 AAP MP Raghav Chadha was today suspended from the Rajya Sabha for breach of privilege after
00:28 complaints from four MPs alleging he named them in a House panel without their consent
00:32 in violation of rules. The curve will remain in place till the Committee of Privileges
00:36 submit its report on the matter. Mr. Chadha yesterday thrashed the charges and said the
00:40 ruling party had targeted him because it could not accept that a 34-year-old MP took on its
00:45 tallest leader. In another advancement, MP Sanjay Singh's suspension was also extended
00:51 until the same tenure. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar announced at the House, "I
00:55 suspend Raghav Chadha from the service of the Council till the Council has the benefit
00:59 of the report by the Committee of Privileges." He said, "I find it expedient to refer the
01:03 matter to the Committee of Privileges. Suspension order dated 24 July 2023 may continue beyond
01:09 the current session till the Council has the benefit of recommendation by the Committee
01:12 of Privileges."
01:13 "Holistic view on the gravity of his misdemeanor, violation of rules, defiant attitude and inappropriate
01:20 conduct. I find it expedient in working Rule 266, Red With Rule 256 and suspend Sir Raghav
01:28 Chadha member from the service of the Council till the Council has the benefit of the report
01:33 of the by the Committee of Privileges."
01:37 So what is the matter all about? Five Rajya Sabha MPs S. Fangnan Konyak, Narhar Yaman
01:43 and Sudhan Shatravedi of BJP, M. Thambedurai of AIADMK and Sasmit Patra of BJD said that
01:51 their name was included without their consent in a select committee moved by Raghav Chadha
01:55 in the House. Raghav Chadha refuted the allegations and said an MP can propose the name for the
02:00 formation of any committee and neither the signature nor the written consent of the person
02:04 whose name is proposed is required.
02:06 "Suppose I organise a birthday party and invite 10 people. 8 of them come and 2 don't
02:11 accept my invitation. Instead, they charge me. How dare you invite us to your birthday?
02:15 This is what happened. I just invited the MPs to be a part of the committee," Raghav
02:19 Chadha said.
02:20 "Instead of expressing remorse for his unethical conduct, Raghav Chadha in his interaction
02:25 with the press outside the House ridiculed the objections raised by his fellow parliamentarians
02:29 for including the names," Goyal said as he moved the motion against Chadha in the
02:33 upper house.
02:34 Referring to Raghav Chadha's subsequent tweet on the issue, Goyal said it was "unbecoming
02:38 of a parliamentarian". Raghav Chadha went on to equate the inclusion of the names of
02:42 members to a select committee with that of a birthday party, Goyal added.
