Hello and welcome to Latest TV News. My name is Jacob Pannins, I'm a reporter for Sussex
00:14
World and I'm going to be speaking to sports reporter Frankie Elliott as we discuss Brighton's
00:19
opening game of the season against Luton and we'll also be talking about how we see the
00:22
rest of the Premier League season panning out. But first, here are your top stories
00:27
from across the county. Wet, wild and windy weather did not deter teams from entering
00:36
the Hastings Carnival Pram Race. The event took place on Wednesday, August 2nd and saw
00:41
teams in fancy dress racing through the streets of the Old Town, pushing elaborate wheeled
00:46
contraptions while collecting money for local charities. Themes included everything from
00:51
Elton John to Alice in Wonderland and even Barbie. On Saturday, August 6th, residents
00:56
and visitors were also treated to the Carnival procession in the Old Town. Local residents
01:01
have voiced their concerns about a proposal at Eastbourne Borough Football Club. Eastbourne
01:06
Borough has placed an application to change the licensing at its ground, known as Priory
01:10
Lane, to allow the club to hold events for up to 2,000 people every Saturday, Sunday
01:15
and on bank holidays. There is also a request to allow the sale of alcohol up to 1am. Some
01:22
residents said they were not made aware of the application long enough before the deadline
01:25
to make comments and concerns have been raised about the potential of anti-social behaviour
01:30
and the detriment to the environment if the application is granted. Residents were subsequently
01:35
invited to the ground to discuss the application and new owner Simon Leslie reaffirmed his
01:40
blueprint for Eastbourne Borough as a community club, while CEO Alan Williams reminded the
01:46
meeting that the whole grounds, administered by the umbrella Acorns you trust, may only
01:50
ever be used for sporting, leisure and recreational use. Eastbourne Borough Council leader Stephen
01:56
Holt has responded to claims from local MP Caroline Ansell that a council-owned building
02:01
in the town has discharged thousands of litres of raw sewage into the sea. Mrs Ansell and
02:06
Councillor Penny D'Carra joined Southern Water's Missed Connections team to see work
02:10
first hand and were updated on progress in finding sewage and waste water pipes wrongly
02:15
and illegally connected to surface water drainage. The MP said she was shown a bathroom that
02:21
was connected to surface water pipes that go straight into the sea, taking untreated
02:25
sewage and other waste items like toilet paper with it. Mr Holt said the issue is being fixed,
02:31
the facilities in the building are not being used and that he believes council officers
02:35
are waiting for Southern Water to approve the final repairs necessary. The much-loved
02:39
wavelength public art is set to return to Bottle Alley Columns in Hastings thanks to
02:44
the efforts of local artists and volunteers. The 480 metre lower deck promenade which runs
02:50
from the pier to Warriors Square has been covered in graffiti tags which have spread
02:54
from the pillars to the 1930s bottle glass walls where it is difficult to remove. Originally
02:59
conceived by Xero as a temporary installation and commissioned by the Hastings Art Festival
03:04
Coastal Currents, this art became a long-term fixture due to the positive public response.
03:10
But Hastings Council say despite their best efforts and those of the artists and the foreshore
03:15
trust it became impossible to continually restore the paintwork. Now thanks to Daniel
03:21
Hardiker and Neil Hetherington from Xero as well as local volunteers, new artwork is being
03:26
created. An area in Sussex is one of the safest places in the UK to live according to research
03:32
from a hardware company. The new study from Hyatt Hardware analysed 2022 crime data from
03:38
across the UK's local authority areas and found that Wealdon in East Sussex ranked fourth
03:42
in the country with an overall breaking and entering score of 0.69 out of 10. Wealdon
03:49
only faces 1.62 robberies, 16.37 burglaries and 24.89 vehicle offences per 100,000 people.
03:58
The study looked at the number of robberies, burglaries, vehicle offences and deaths from
04:03
persons per 100,000 people to reveal where in the UK is the safest to live with the least
04:09
amount of home break-ins.
