00:20:03 I've lived it, all the way expressing my own voice

00:20:06 at the civil crossroads of where country music

00:20:09 and rock and roll reclaimed one another.

00:20:11 ♪ You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles ♪

00:20:19 A call came from the West.

00:20:21 I followed it as countless millions of others have.

00:20:25 Always full of promise,

00:20:27 we as Americans seem to continuously carry our dreams

00:20:30 to the edge of the continent.

00:20:32 A place where we believe all our best can be found.

00:20:35 For the past two centuries, Los Angeles

00:20:37 and the sounding heart of New California

00:20:39 has beckoned to the migrant as well as the risk taker.

00:20:43 There was gold there, land, money, and sun.

00:20:48 Then there was Hollywood.

00:20:51 Swimming pools, movie stars.

00:20:54 Music moves with people. It migrates.

00:20:57 And California has always been a hot crucible

00:20:59 for those bold enough to follow their desires and emotions.

00:21:03 Their music came with them.

00:21:05 It came first with Pioneers.

00:21:07 It came again with the Gold Rush.

00:21:09 The Dust Bowl carried that music

00:21:11 along the Tom Jode Road to California.

00:21:14 The Great Migration brought even more of it.

00:21:17 Folk, country, blues, bluegrass, gospel, jazz.

00:21:22 All of it seemed to travel toward the western sun.

00:21:25 As that music arrived, it also met Mexican music,

00:21:29 which had flourished here since the state was a Spanish colony.

00:21:32 It's in the American DNA.

00:21:34 Seeped from afar and melded into the experiment that is this nation.

00:21:39 Over time, it's borne witness to the pain of expansion

00:21:42 and its casualty, as well as exultation.

00:21:46 Carrying with it all the way, America's soul.

00:21:50 So when you think about this music,

00:21:52 try to consider its importance to America as a whole,

00:21:55 not just some strange moment of a cultural divide.

00:22:03 Country music is one of the Central American expressions

00:22:06 that holds our collective magic.

00:22:08 The mystical city of Los Angeles

00:22:10 was literally built on change and moving ground.

00:22:13 So it should be no surprise to anyone

00:22:15 that young musicians flocked here from everywhere in the 1960s.

00:22:19 They were drawn to it in the 1960s.

00:22:22 They were drawn by the call of the counterculture,

00:22:25 as well as the city's rise as a recording center.

00:22:28 And at that moment, the entire country seemed torn,

00:22:31 divided politically and culturally.

00:22:34 Violence sadly exploded in our streets.

00:22:37 Ironically, the young rock and rollers turned inward,

00:22:41 examining the nation and themselves through a rediscovery of folk music

00:22:45 with its songs full of tangible melody.

00:22:48 And be assured, that same reflection was felt nationwide.

00:22:53 A core group of district musicians

00:22:55 gravitated to Los Angeles and converged here in local clubs.

00:22:59 Places like the Ash Grove, the Troubadour, and the World Family.

00:23:04 Giving rise to bands like The Byrds,

00:23:07 with Chris Hillman, Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, and Gene Clark.

00:23:11 The cosmic cowboys of Buffalo Springfield,

00:23:14 with Neil Young, Stephen Stills, and Richie Fure.

00:23:18 There were also singers like Leather Ron Stout, with the Stone Ponies.

00:23:22 Those burgeoning country rockers,

00:23:24 leaned into the fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and pedal steel

00:23:28 with the passion and willfulness of a birch fern.

00:23:32 The table was certainly set for Graham Parsons and Emmylou Harris.

00:23:36 The polka arrived, and then the Eagles were born.

00:23:40 That sound would guide American popular music and culture

00:23:44 throughout the 70s and beyond.

00:23:46 Rooted in country instrumentation,

00:23:48 it reverberated through our radios in a way that no one could forget.

00:23:52 And you hear these influences everywhere in country music now.

00:23:55 In fact, if that music were being made today,

00:23:58 we'd simply call it country.

00:24:17 And then, there were those in the late 70s and the early 80s

00:24:22 who would find their specific path to continue to thrive.

00:24:25 That new category would take the music somewhere else.

00:24:28 The punk movement set the city aflame.

00:24:31 And in LA, it spawned an unlikely alliance among musicians

00:24:35 determined to once again explore country,

00:24:37 and unafraid to push the boundaries of it.

00:24:40 They delivered it with a brand new sense of urgency.

00:24:44 Witnessed acts as they became the news.

00:24:47 Witnessed the dills as they shaped fiction.
