00:00 Kelly Clarkson is finding more magic within herself after her divorce.
00:03 During her Las Vegas residency on Saturday,
00:06 she debuted her 2015 track "Piece by Piece" with some changed lyrics.
00:10 She told the audience that she initially wrote the song feeling super hopeful,
00:18 but added, "Well, sometimes hopeful turns into hopeless."
00:22 The song is sung from the perspective of Clarkson talking to her father about how her ex-husband,
00:27 Brandon Blackstock, fills a better role as a parent and husband than his neglectful approach.
00:32 The song acts as a sequel to her 2004 hit "Because of You," which is also directed
00:37 at the musician's father about how his absence caused her pain and hardship.
00:41 Now, the singer is amending some of the lyrics to "Piece by Piece" that originally praised
00:49 Blackstock. So instead of the words "but piece by piece he collected me up,
00:54 off the ground where you abandon things," she now sings "I" instead of "he,"
00:58 turning the song into a post-heartbreak, self-empowering anthem instead.
01:02 The lyric changes also seem to hint at one point of contention within the pair's split - money.
01:08 The former couple tied the knot in 2013 but split in 2020. In July of 2021, Clarkson was ordered to
01:14 pay Blackstock nearly $200,000 a month in spousal and child support as part of their divorce settlement.
01:21 Clarkson previously explained her plans to perform the track during her residency,
01:26 sharing that she was doing so not only for fans but for that girl that did believe wholeheartedly
01:31 that that's what was happening and that's what I saw. She added, "I know that that's
01:35 incredibly sad to think about, but you know, it's real."
