Around 6 million years ago, seismic activities led to lime sediment accumulation and a limestone crust forming on the stones' surface. Rainwater penetrated, causing a chemical reaction that built up internal pressure, resulting in growth and distinct layers like tree rings. While not biologically "living," Trovants are often described as such due to their unique characteristics and growth. In Costesti village, they vary in size, shape, and even feature smaller attached stones and "Twin Trovants." These exceptional features make them a significant tourist attraction.
