Are you hankering for a traditional home-cooked meal but don't have the time or energy then head downtown. 23ABC's Ava Kershner visited a restaurant that serves up traditional Mexican food like their mom would make in this week's Doing Downtown.

00:06 Twenty three ABC's Ava Kirschner stopped by a restaurant that serves up

00:10 traditional Mexican food like mom would make in this week's doing downtown.

00:14 Gus, you've shown me some pretty hard hitters in the taste of downtown preview,

00:19 but you're telling me that this restaurant really takes the cake.

00:21 It really does.

00:23 I this is one of my favorite places in town for traditional Mexican food.

00:27 We have a lot of traditional Mexican restaurants here in Bakersfield.

00:30 But this one to me personally, it is the best.

00:33 It brings Mexican traditional home style cooking and it puts it in the public's eye.

00:38 And what better place than downtown Bakersfield?

00:40 All right. Here we go.

00:42 Yeah, let's go check it out.

00:43 Can you tell me a little bit about the dish?

00:47 OK, Steve, so I'm going to see as the people.

00:50 These are pork ribs.

00:52 I'm pretty fast.

00:54 They can prepare with tomato, tomatoes, onions.

00:58 You have to talk to him.

01:01 And then the plancha and everything comes together when you put it on the grill.

01:05 And this is important.

01:07 What for the last time to do is to use this is the platio

01:09 but I represent that punchy those and then taste the downtown.

01:12 So this is the dish that is made by Chico's kind of famous here in town.

01:17 It's asked for on a daily basis by a majority of the people that come

01:21 and our regular customers.

01:23 Of course, all of our food is good and it's delicious.

01:25 But this seems to be the one that captures everyone's attention.

01:29 OK, so the reason Panchito's is becoming a really

01:34 nice and well-known downtown spot for Mexican food is because of this

01:38 traditional dishes that you can't really find in very many places.

01:41 This being one of them.

01:43 What should we try first?

01:44 So you're going to eat this the way we traditionally do in Mexico.

01:47 So you're going to grab a tortilla.

01:48 Now, these are handmade tortillas.

01:50 They make them here, by the way.

01:51 So it's now the moment of truth for you to enjoy and try it out.

01:57 Oh, my gosh. This is like it's like a warm hug.

02:02 The way that they really bring out the Mexican household food

02:09 and tradition behind them, how Mexican families eat is right next to you.

02:13 And this is a very famous Mexican dessert called jirakia.

02:18 There's no traditional way eating this.

02:20 It's just go into it. Just dig in.

02:23 Right. Oh, my goodness.

02:29 That's so good.

02:30 You won't find that in any other locations, but here.

02:33 That is like one of the best flavors I've like had in a while.

02:46 Panchito's is very traditional, just kind of like the food that you had today.
