Irv Smith Jr. on Joe Burrow, the Bengals' Offense and MORE
Transcript
00:00 How has your training camp been so far with the Cincinnati Bengals?
00:03 My training camp, I feel like it's been good.
00:05 Just attacking one day at a time, trying to just learn the offense as best as I can and
00:10 make plays, whether it's in a run game, the pass game, helping my team in any way that
00:15 I can.
00:16 So, I feel like it's been good.
00:18 Always room to improve and always things to build on, but so far it's been good.
00:24 I know Burrow obviously is out right now, but how has your relationship developed since
00:29 you've been here?
00:30 Oh yeah, it's grown every day.
00:32 Obviously he's not at practice right now, but in the meeting rooms and things like that
00:35 he's very active.
00:36 Just showing him that we can make plays as a group, receivers, tight ends, running backs,
00:44 the O-line, just building that confidence.
00:47 He's a leader of this team and we believe in him more than anybody, so it's awesome
00:52 having a guy like that to lean on because in big games and stuff like that, it's really
00:57 going to matter.
00:58 And I've got to ask what you did in the offseason.
01:01 I've been watching you in camp.
01:02 It does not seem like the heat has affected you.
01:04 I don't know how you're able to pull that off, but how did you prepare for training
01:08 camp this year?
01:09 I was actually down in New Orleans and Miami a little bit training, so I was in the heat
01:13 a lot.
01:14 So, the second day of training camp it got me.
01:18 Nobody really seen it.
01:19 I had caught some cramps and stuff, but I bounced back from that and we good now.
01:24 Just figured out the right routine, can't get in the hot tub and stuff before practice.
01:28 When it's that hot.
01:32 I've noticed that a few guys like to take note of how much weight they lose during a
01:36 practice.
01:37 Do you do that too or no?
01:38 Yeah, they weigh us when we first come in and then after practice.
01:42 So, yeah, usually it's a good at least five pounds, six pounds.
01:47 Sometimes seven if it's a rougher practice.
01:50 I haven't weighed myself out yet, so we'll see.
01:52 We'll see soon.
01:53 I've noticed a lot of guys with smoothies and ice cream.
01:56 Did you dive into that or no?
01:57 I gotta eat dinner first.
01:59 What time is it?
02:00 That is so proper of you.
02:01 Yeah, I gotta eat my food and then eat the ice cream.
02:05 They're here until like 5.30, so I gotta eat my food soon and get to that.
02:10 So, you're raised in a way where you gotta eat your good food first and then you have
02:14 ice cream after?
02:15 Yeah, especially if I'm losing weight.
02:16 So, then if I'm losing like five, six pounds and I eat ice cream and then I'm not as hungry
02:21 for the real food, then it's like, you know, my parents, I feel like they taught me right.
02:26 I raise my kids the same way.
02:27 It's all good.
02:29 Last question for you.
02:30 You came to a team with a massive chip on its shoulder.
02:33 Do you feel that sense around this building?
02:35 Yeah, that's definitely the energy around this building.
02:39 From the players to the coaches to the ownership, everybody.
02:43 It's a standard that's set and it's something that I don't take lightly.
02:48 It's something that we come to work every day with that on our mind.
