00:06 You're about to see Nightmare, which is one of my two student films.

00:09 This film was made in my senior year of the character animation program

00:13 at the California Institute of the Arts.

00:16 In this program, you really did everything on these films,

00:19 from coming up with the story idea, designing the world,

00:24 designing the characters, doing layouts, the animation,

00:29 even shooting it under the camera.

00:31 You did everything.

00:33 Nightmare is a pencil test, which is the preliminary form in hand-drawn animation.

00:38 And so when you watch this, you'll see everything seems to be transparent.

00:42 Well, that's because the layers of drawings were backlit,

00:45 so you could see the bottom layers through the top ones.

00:49 I kind of thought about that, and I did a lot of stuff with black marker to black it all out,

00:54 to try to make it a little higher production quality for a pencil test.

00:59 The collaborative spirit that is alive here at Pixar really started

01:04 at the character animation program at CalArts.

01:06 We'd all get together and kind of look at people's films and make notes and comments.

01:11 And I had a lot of really good friends that helped me,

01:13 helped me out with suggestions here and there.

01:16 But in the end, at that time, you did everything yourself.

01:20 I was a bit of a procrastinator.

01:22 The hardest part of making these films was getting them done,

01:26 because I would wait way too long to start my project.

01:30 It's interesting now having five sons.

01:33 I go to them, "I was a procrastinator.

01:36 Please don't be a procrastinator in your life."

01:40 Now looking back after all these years, I'm actually really kind of proud of it,

01:46 because it's really sweet in the end.

01:48 And I kind of forgot about that.
