00:00 What did you love doing as a kid growing up in Sheffield?

00:03 Well as a child we'd come into Sheffield on the trams and it would be mainly around Christmas

00:08 time because we lived out of Sheffield.

00:12 What did you do that you enjoyed?

00:14 Well just the kid things that they were, you know, going to the cinema and going to theatre

00:21 and the shopping of course.

00:23 But yeah, mainly as a child that was the only things that we did.

00:30 Did you have a favourite theatre or shop when you came here?

00:33 The Lyceum, yeah.

00:35 The shops.

00:36 I can't remember what the kids' shops were at Christmas.

00:40 No, can't remember.

00:42 What did you used to enjoy doing as a child growing up in Sheffield?

00:45 I used to love coming into town with my mum and she used to take me for a coffee and a

00:50 biscuit somewhere and that was always a real big treat.

00:53 Was there a place that you used to enjoy going particularly?

00:55 We used to go to Cole Brothers a lot of the time and to Walsh's which used to be here.

01:02 And then there was a shop on Glossop Road called Bringing It All Back Home and she used

01:07 to take me there and I used to have a piece of tiger cake.

01:12 What did you enjoy doing as a child growing up in Sheffield?

01:17 Playing football on the side streets, cricket, going to the youth clubs.

01:24 Really enjoyed life in general as a boy.

01:27 Was there anywhere in particular that you used to like to go?

01:30 Any places?

01:31 To the parks.

01:32 Which was your favourite park?

01:34 Firth Park.

01:35 We used to march up there with big banners and everything.

01:40 I was in the boys club, the boys brigades.

01:43 Went to the youth clubs.

01:44 What did you love doing as a child growing up in Sheffield?

01:51 We were allowed to wander.

01:53 There was lots of swimming baths I remember.

01:57 In every area there was a swimming bath.

02:01 Also I remember Rivelyn.

02:03 We used to have all them paddling pools and Lido at Malauser.

02:09 I don't know if that's still there.

02:11 No, right.

02:13 And there were so many things we could do as a child.

02:22 And then if you want to go to parks you don't feel safe.

02:27 Well I don't anyway.

02:28 I always think I'll have to get somebody to walk with me, not in a park or something

02:32 because you feel a bit vulnerable.

02:35 But that's taking you off the point of what you did when you were a child.

02:38 So yeah, I just remember, oh and we had Roxie's, I forgot what they used to call it.

02:45 It was a disco for Saturdays for under a certain age.

02:53 And then they had a sort of Tuesday night one for a bit older teenagers.

02:57 So that was good.

03:01 So we had youth clubs as well.

03:05 I used to live at Upper Thorpe and there's a big green coat Ponderosa and that used to

03:10 have like a, it was like a youth club and there were people that used to take you on,

03:21 they did some, went on some long boats and things like that.

03:25 And there were just crafts to do and things like that and Snook could play, or he could

03:32 do a disco as well there.

03:34 So it was quite, the thing where people used to go and hang out sort of thing.

03:39 But we don't have them sort of things now, well I don't know.

03:45 Anyway, but that's things we used to like.

03:49 And it was just, and Sheffield were a much nicer place than it is now.

03:55 It looks a bit like it's running, it's going to down.

03:58 It's alright.

03:59 What did you like doing growing up in Sheffield?

04:01 When I was growing up, the shops, all the shops were lovely.

04:07 Everywhere was clean and I used to like to go down to the Sheaf market where they used

04:14 to sell all the goods, pottery, and I used to get all my shoes from that instance down

04:21 there years ago.

04:25 And I used to, I was in the Girls Life Brigade as well.

04:29 I used to go to church as well and I just enjoyed life as I was younger and we weren't

04:36 afraid to go anywhere or go out on our own.

04:42 We weren't afraid to go out at night.
