00:00 Hey, look who's here just hanging out at Cowboys training camp on the first day of workouts.
00:05 What are you doing here, Troy?
00:06 Well, you know, I've got to play 30 minutes from here in Montecito.
00:09 Oh, yeah.
00:10 I just thought I would pop down and see how the boys were doing.
00:14 How are we looking this year?
00:16 Just fantastic out here today.
00:18 Even though, as you know, because you did it, when you're playing quarterback, you're
00:21 getting things done, right?
00:23 There's rhythm and there's the installation of the system, all that, but we're not going
00:27 to really know who's who until maybe we get to preseason games?
00:30 No, well, yeah, because the fundamentals of the sport require pads, helmets and shoulder
00:36 pads.
00:37 So it's good, as you mentioned, for the timing of these skill players, but for the rest of
00:41 them, you know, we won't get much of a look from them until they put the pads on.
00:46 How familiar are you with the installation of the West Coast offense, which, by the way,
00:50 as you may know, Dak Prescott and the quarterbacks have labeled the Texas Coast offense.
00:55 I don't miss a beat.
00:56 Yeah, well, maybe for Dak and the Cowboys' sake, hopefully we're talking about the Texas
01:02 Coast offense, you know, a decade from now, like they did the West Coast.
01:06 Bill Walsh.
01:07 Yeah, that would mean that a lot of good things have happened for this team and the changes
01:12 made offensively were for the better.
01:14 West Coast offense was never your bag, but I bet you admired some of the aspects of it.
01:18 Oh, absolutely.
01:19 Yeah, absolutely.
01:20 And a lot of the things that we did were actually West Coast principles.
01:23 And, you know, North Turner back in the day, he would watch 49ers tape because they were
01:27 doing so many good things, creative things.
01:29 And I know that's-
01:30 Of course, he grew up on the 49ers.
01:31 Yeah, and that's McCarthy's background.
01:34 So I'm excited.
01:35 I mean, everyone's looking forward to what this offense is going to look like this year.
01:38 I'm looking forward to it as well.
01:40 It's easy in July to say it's going to be great, it's going to be better, but no one
01:44 really knows that.
01:45 And Dak's the guy who's got to get comfortable with everything that's happening, and I'm
01:49 sure that he will.
01:50 And I'm looking forward to seeing what this version looks like.
01:53 I'm pretty sure he doesn't throw 15 interceptions.
01:55 Well, and I think that he got a bad rap in a lot of that because, you know, I looked
01:59 at all those interceptions.
02:00 I thought he could have had some help in a lot of areas.
02:03 I know he won't say that because he'll take the blame for all of them, but I'm personally
02:09 not concerned about the interceptions that he threw last year.
02:11 And I'd be shocked if he got anywhere close to that this season.
02:15 Cowboys, Eagles, 49ers.
02:16 You've got the big three in the NFC.
02:18 Yeah, I think that's fair.
02:21 I think that, you know, obviously the top quarterbacks in general are playing in the
02:26 AFC.
02:27 I think that opens things up a little bit for the Cowboys, but they've got to get out
02:30 of their own division and Philadelphia's going to be solid again.
02:32 Justin Herbert just hit 262, as in million.
02:36 I guess he can afford a home in Montecito too now.
02:39 He can afford a couple homes.
02:42 There are the old-time guys.
02:43 They get it to you when you've got your contract.
02:45 "Oh, I wish I would have played in this era."
02:47 If you do that to yourself, even you, you're going to give yourself an aneurysm.
02:51 Oh, yeah.
02:52 I was very pleased with how I was compensated when I played, but a little bit envious of
02:59 this group of quarterbacks and what they've been able to do.
03:02 I think it's awesome, as we know.
03:05 What it highlights is just how much revenue the NFL is bringing in, which is pretty incredible.
03:10 In part due to your fine work on the network.
03:12 Well, I didn't want to say that, but I'm glad you're recognizing that.
03:18 One more thing on the dollars and cents of it all.
03:22 Just like you said, I don't know if the web would get dacked to talk about how it's not
03:26 his fault.
03:27 If you played today, forget the money.
03:31 Here's my argument, and I'm a little biased towards you, as you may be familiar.
03:34 I said back then, had you played in Dan Marino's system, you would have been Dan Marino with
03:38 numbers.
03:39 If you played in today's NFL with these rules, forget the money, I don't think anybody would
03:45 ever say, "I looked at Aikman's old touchdown numbers.
03:47 Touchdown numbers don't look very good.
03:49 What's so big about Aikman?"
03:51 Yeah, well the times have changed, as we know.
03:54 The important thing if I were playing in today's NFL would still be, are we winning championships?
04:00 I still think that there are those who will look at numbers, and comparing anyone's numbers
04:05 of my era, really pretty much anyone's.
04:07 In a lot of ways, even Dan's are as great as he was, relative to what's happening now,
04:12 and the number of yards and touchdowns they're putting up each season is one thing.
04:16 It still all comes down to being able to win championships, and I think that's the common
04:20 thread.
04:21 Hey, Paul, you're one of a kind.
04:22 Thank you, my man.
04:23 I appreciate you, kid.
04:23 (crowd cheering)
