00:00 I'm Sarah Wise, I'm Head of Early Years in Key State 1 at NMPA2
00:04 and this project is part of a huge project we've been doing over two years.
00:10 This is one of six settings that we've been in
00:13 and this project has been really well received here
00:17 and we were also able to apply for some money from the Council Empowerment Fund
00:22 and they've been able to spend the money on buying extra resources to supplement the original project.
00:29 What we've tried to do is move practitioners away from music being a one-off group time,
00:35 albeit daily perhaps, but we wanted to introduce music throughout the children's morning or afternoon.

01:20 There are resources out and about that children can help themselves to.
01:24 They can take a drum to the area with the stickle bricks.
01:29 They can move things around, explore sound, work with their friends, sing, dance, relax.
01:36 But music happens every day throughout the session.
01:39 So we're seeing them bring their musical self to their setting,
01:43 seeing the incredible skill and knowledge some of them have already
01:46 and they've been able to develop their senses of pulse,
01:49 when to rhythm, pitch, match, sing and tune, compose.
01:54 But we also see the benefits in terms of their social emotional development, teamwork, self-regulation
02:00 and then you've got the things like maths.
02:03 I've just sung a little song with a chap on their outdoor xylophone.
02:07 I said, "Are we going to sing a song?" and he said it was a counting song
02:10 and off we went counting while playing music.
02:12 So the benefits across the areas of learning have been huge.
