A 78-year-old man has been killed in a retirement village fire north of Melbourne. Arson investigators are waiting for the home to be deemed safe so they can assess the damage.

00:00 Police have just spoken and we can confirm that a 78 year old man has died in this morning's
00:07 fire at a retirement village in Kilmore.
00:09 Kilmore is located about an hour's north of Melbourne.
00:13 His wife has escaped uninjured.
00:15 The couple were new to the area.
00:17 They'd only been living in this area for about a couple of weeks.
00:21 From the fire this morning, 40 people have been displaced.
00:24 So this fire took hold just after 6 o'clock this morning and has quickly spread to two
00:29 units damaging the one that the couple live in as well as a neighbouring property.
00:34 Those residents, about 40 of them, are now displaced and in the care of the local council
00:39 until they can get into their property.
00:42 We heard from Victoria Police Acting Inspector Jamie Cutler moments ago that there's still
00:47 details that are yet to be known.
00:50 We can't say where it is.
00:51 We don't know where it is until we get in there and have a look.

00:56 There's two units that have been affected, one unit more than the other.
01:00 And unfortunately the lesser unit, sorry, the unit that's been impacted more is where

01:08 So Ros, arson detectives are entering the building now.
