The United States' largest reptile bank based in Arizona has applied to the federal government to import six gharials and another equal number of mugger crocodiles from Tamil Nadu. The American reptile bank argued that if the import is approved, it would help preserve these endangered species. A federal notification was issued on Monday under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). According to the notification, the Phoenix Herpetological Society has applied for permission in this regard to the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The federal government has asked for public comments in this regard.
