पौराणिक ग्रन्थों के अनुसार जिस प्रकार प्रत्येक मास का कोई न कोई स्वामी होता है किन्तु अधिकमास का कोई स्वामी नहीं है। अत: इस मास में शुभ-कार्य करना वर्जित है। विवाह, यज्ञोपवीत, गृह प्रवेश, मुंडन आदि कोई भी कार्य इस मास में नहीं होते हैं। पौराणिक ग्रन्थों की कथा के अनुसार एक बार अधिक मास भगवान विष्णु के पास गया और उसने उन्हें अपनी समस्या बतलाई। वह बहुत दु:खी था कि उसका कोई स्वामी नहीं है। विष्णु भगवान ने उसे दु:खी देखा तो उन्हेंं उस पर दया आ गई। उसी दिन से ही भगवान विष्णु ने उसे अपना नाम दे दिया और तभी से यह मास पुरुषोत्तम मास के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हो गया। वीडियो में जानें अधिक मास 2023: अधिक मास क्या होता है | अधिक मास क्यों आता है ?
