NYC Passes AI Regulation in Hiring
The New York City Council recently passed Local Law 144, the first of its kind to regulate the use of Artificial Intelligence in employment tools. This groundbreaking legislation requires companies to annually audit and assess the potential for racism or sexism biases in their AI-driven employment tools, known as Automated Employment Decision Tools. Moreover, they must inform candidates if an AEDT is used in the hiring process. While this law is widely praised for its forward-thinking and proactive approach to reducing bias in the workplace, the Job Creators Network and the Society for Human Resource Management have voiced their concerns about the potential fines and overregulation.
