The inspiration behind this video:
The Nick Fury Skrull fan theory would explain the inconsistencies regarding the MCU origin of Nick Fury's eyepatch. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Nick Fury suggested that he lost an eye because someone he trusted betrayed him, while Captain Marvel revealed that a young and naive Nick Fury lost his eye while playing with Goose the Flerken. If the real Nick Fury died after Bucky Barnes shot him halfway through Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it's possible that the Skrull that replaced him believed the origin of his eyepatch to be deeper and more sinister than it actually was.
It's also possible that the Skrull impersonating Nick Fury since 2014 got tired of Earthly matters and abandoned the planet in order to take a break in outer space. Knowing that Talos is Nick Fury's trustworthy Skrull friend, he could have asked him to take his place temporarily, which means that Spider-Man: Far From Home's Nick Fury would have been a copy of a copy of the original character. Why this Skrull didn't revert to his original appearance would still be a mystery, however. Of course, whether the Nick Fury Skrull fan theory is true will only be officially confirmed onscreen, possibly in a future Secret Invasion episode.
