06:43 Herd animals band together for safety in numbers.

06:47 It is harder for a predator to pick a single target

06:59 out of a jumbled mass of bodies.

07:04 But if one does get caught,

07:27 often the very young or old or a sick animal,

07:30 the herd functions best by fleeing together.

07:33 That means not stopping to try to rescue their companion.

07:45 They are just not equipped to do that.

07:47 Once in a while, we might see a mother fight

07:57 to defend her offspring.

08:07 they have evolved to survive by fleeing as a group

08:10 and leaving the weakest members to satiate the predators

08:13 helps the rest of them to survive better.

08:22 Crocodiles are the biggest predators of wildebeest.

08:42 More wildebeest are killed by crocodiles

08:45 than any other predator.

08:48 This is because a stampede is more deadly

08:51 and likely to occur in crocodile infested waters

08:55 Poachers and hunters kill the wildebeest

09:12 for their meat and for trophies.

09:45 In the water, the crocodile wins almost all the fights

09:48 with lion because the crocodile is built for swimming

09:51 over a long period of time

09:53 and can hold its breath underwater

09:55 so it can go underwater, swim under the lion

09:58 and bite at the lion's underside,

10:00 possibly ripping its stomach open.

10:02 Near the riverbank, the crocodile wins 80% of the time

10:12 because if it gets the lion in its jaws,

10:14 it can drag it into the water and either drown it

10:17 or give it the infamous death roll

10:19 where it rips chunks off its prey,

10:21 causing it to bleed to death.

10:23 Or if the lion somehow starts to get the upper hand,

10:31 it can retreat into the water and either flee

10:34 or wait until the lion's guard is lowered

10:36 and charge back out and deliver the killing bite.
