Riot police were seen patrolling the streets of Strasbourg, France, after residents in one suburb damaged property and set vehicles alight.

Unrest broke out in the Parisian suburb of Nanterre after a 17-year-old was shot dead by police.

Footage from the suburb of La Meinau, Strasbourg, shows the police officers standing guard and firefighters tackling multiple blazes.

Protests and riots have spread across the country to major cities in response to the killing.

Hania C, who didn't want to reveal her last name, was in Strasbourg with her family celebrating Eid when the violence broke out.

She said: "It was in the district of Meinau in Strasbourg, precisely on Avenue de Normandie and for one of the videos it was on Rue de Provence, two streets away.

"I was there because it was Eid and so we were with my family at my mother's and my uncle's.

"It started with cars burned and Molotov cocktails were thrown.

"The firefighters then arrived to put out the fire. Several onlookers from the neighbourhood had also come out.

"We got out in turn to put the cars away and that's when we saw the police vans arriving - at least six vans.

"We also noticed that they were carrying LBDs and throwing defence balls.

"Throughout we also heard mortar fire from around 11 pm until 1 am."

The footage was filmed on June 28.
