A matéria-prima símbolo da economia da região na virada do século XIX para o século XX ergueu palácios e teatros no Norte do Brasil, com a riqueza concentrada nas mãos de uma elite que explorava seringueiros por meio da escravidão por dívidas, conhecida como “sistema de aviamento”. Hoje, o cenário é outro: os seringueiros extraem látex com o conhecimento adquirido de pais e avós e são remunerados, transformando o produto em calçados, artigos de decoração e biojoias.
