Part-writing authentic cadences is a skill that involves applying the principles of harmony and voice-leading to create a sense of closure at the end of a musical phrase. An authentic cadence is a type of cadence that moves from the dominant chord (V) to the tonic chord (I) in a given key.

There are two kinds of authentic cadences: perfect and imperfect. A perfect authentic cadence (PAC) occurs when both chords are in root position and the soprano voice has the tonic note as its highest pitch. An imperfect authentic cadence (IAC) occurs when either or both chords are inverted, or when the soprano voice does not have the tonic note as its highest pitch.

Part-writing authentic cadences requires following some basic guidelines, such as avoiding parallel fifths and octaves, resolving tendency tones correctly, maintaining good voice independence and spacing, and choosing appropriate chord inversions. This video will introduce these guidelines and provide examples and exercises for part-writing authentic cadences with triads only.

An authentic cadence is any cadence that ends a phrase and uses the chord progression V-I.
