Archaeologists have stumbled upon an extremely rare Bronze Age sword at an ancient burial site in Germany. The sword is so well-preserved that it still gleams! The weapon, believed to be 3,000 years old, was dug up in the small town of Nordlingen in the state of Bavaria last week. It has a bronze octagonal hilt and comes from a grave in which three people — a man, a woman and a boy — were buried in quick succession with bronze objects, the Bavarian office said in a statement . It is not yet clear whether the three were related to each other and, if so, how. Researchers believe that it was left in the grave as a burial gift. The sword is thought to date to the end of the 14th century BCE, the Middle Bronze Age. A sword like this, with an octagonal handle made entirely from bronze, is an extremely rare find. It is very unusual to find swords from the said period….but a few have emerged from burial mounds that were opened in the 19th century or as individual finds. Researchers also believe that the sword has no signs of having been used, which suggests that it may have been created for ritualistic purposes. However, the center of gravity on the sword’s front end means that it would have made an effective weapon had it been used in battle. The researchers say that more comprehensive examination is needed so that the archaeologists could categorise it more properly.
