Climate Crisis Fuels Tornado Surge
Experts warn that global warming is causing an increase in the threat of tornadoes, with weather conditions conducive to tornado formation becoming more frequent and widespread. The United States has experienced a six-fold increase in billion-dollar severe storms that produce tornadoes in the past decade compared to the previous two decades. Tornadoes this year have already surpassed the annual average, causing fatalities, as the tornado season starts earlier and tornado alley expands into new areas such as northeast Texas, eastern Oklahoma, the Arkansas River Valley, and the mid-South. The expanding tornado alley raises concerns for insurers as frequent and severe tornadoes may result in significant economic losses. The insurance industry is grappling with declining capital, higher prices, reduced coverage, and market exits. Insurers like State Farm and Allstate have halted writing homeowners insurance in California due to wildfire risks.
