The first episode of War Sailor begins in 1939, as the German invasion of Norway is imminent. Alfred Garnes (Kristoffer Joner) is a young sailor who works on a merchant ship in Bergen. He is married to Cecilia (Ine Marie Wilmann) and they have three young children. Alfred's best friend, Sigbjørn Kvalen (Pål Sverre Hagen), is also a sailor.
The day before the invasion, Alfred and Sigbjørn are drinking in a bar when they hear news that the Germans have landed in Oslo. They immediately rush to the docks to try to find their ship, but it has already left. Alfred and Sigbjørn are forced to join another ship, the SS Stavangerfjord, which is headed to England.
The voyage is long and dangerous. The ship is constantly under threat from German submarines. Alfred and Sigbjørn are both terrified, but they know that they must do their duty to protect their country.
