Porsche Wants to Own the 'Ring' with New EV Hypercar Concept.
Meet Mission X.

By the time most people turn 75, just being alive and well is enough for a gift. But for Porsche's 75th birthday, the iconic sports car company gave him a great birthday present; According to the brand, it will be the fastest production car on the Nurburgring.

Mission X
Or at least it will be if Porsche decides to build it. This Mission X is just a concept for now, but it's a strong indication of what Porsche's next moon shot might look like.

How big a shot? Porsche says this thing will offer an outstanding power-to-weight ratio of at least one horsepower per 2.2 pounds of weight from a new, all-electric, 900-volt architecture. If we use Porsche's latest hypercar, 2015's 918 Spyder, and its 3,700-pound curb weight as a reference, that's somewhere around 1,700 horsepower. That's nearly double what the Spyder left when it became the first production car to complete a lap on the Nürburgring in under seven minutes.

Again, that's just a guess as we don't know the weight yet, but that kind of power level easily makes it the most powerful road-going Porsche ever, delivering significantly more power than even the track-only 919 Hybrid Evo.

Porsche unveiled the Mission X concept on the company's 75th anniversary and on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. There's a natural connection here, with the Mission X's design also said to be inspired by Le Mans, with its doors opening up and forward, aka the passenger compartment protected by the classic 917th carbon fiber exoskeleton. The resulting shape is reminiscent of old Le Mans prototypes, but applied with a modern flair.

The interior of this dome is also quite eye-catching, with contrast colored seats for the driver and passenger and six-point seat belts for both. In a strange, semi-retro throwback to the 959, the passenger instrument cluster features a slot for analog or digital stopwatches.

Despite the possibly excessive amount of power, the Mission X is relatively compact. It's 177 inches long and 78.7 inches wide overall, 6 inches shorter and over 2 inches wider than the 918 Spyder. The wheelbase is the same though.

Although powered by electricity like the Taycan, Porsche has placed the battery pack behind the seats in a so-called "e-core" layout, which aims to create the same kind of handling dynamics as a mid-engined car.

We've seen insane levels of power and performance in the production halls of brands like Rimac and even Tesla and Lucid, so if Porsche is to make this next-gen hypercar to impress, it will need four-digit horsepower numbers. The thought of that kind of power combined with the engineering and racing expertise of a company like Porsche is worth getting excited about.
