00:00 Hi everyone, this is Jenny Strebe with Confessions of a Hairstylist and I'm so excited to take
00:07 over Facebook Live on American Salon to show you guys a beautiful bridal up style utilizing
00:14 all of KINRA hair products. KINRA hair products are one of my sponsors, they actually are
00:18 sponsoring my educational app that's going to be out in a couple weeks so definitely
00:22 check that out. Check me out on Instagram for details on that. So I have my beautiful
00:29 model Taylor here and what I want to show you guys is a very easy bridal style utilizing
00:36 braid techniques. So what I always like to think about is when you're doing up styles
00:41 you've got to think of it like you're piecing a puzzle together. You want to slowly piece
00:45 your puzzle together. So we're going to take it section by section. So I'm going to take
00:49 my comb and we're going to go ahead and section the front pieces out for later. So we're just
00:55 going to do a headband section is what I like to call it on each side. So a headband section
01:02 is at a slight diagonal to the tip of the ear. So this is usually our money section
01:11 so that's why I like to go ahead and use those sections later and incorporate that into the
01:16 rest of the style. So now I'm going to turn Taylor, I pre-curled her with a 1 inch curling
01:22 iron just to add a little bit of wave. Now we want a little bit of fullness, we need
01:26 a little bit of texture and grip to her hair because it's a little bit silky. So we're
01:30 going to go ahead and use the dry volume shampoo by Kenra and just get in there really good
01:36 and add some more volume to it. And you can see Taylor has fine hair but this is creating
01:42 a lot of volume to it. So just getting in there because we want kind of a messy tousled
01:49 look with our braids incorporated into it. So now we're going to just take horizontal
01:55 sections, I'm going to get pretty aggressive with some backcombing here. We're going to
02:01 pull the section up and then get in there with a little bit of our volume shampoo here
02:07 and then just backcomb it. With having that spray in there it just gives us a little bit
02:13 more grip to the hair. Now taking another section, doing the same thing, adding a little
02:19 bit of our spray and then getting in there and backcombing it. We're going to go ahead
02:26 and release it so you can see she has some nice volume here. I'm going to go ahead and
02:31 kind of rake through with my fingers on the top just ever so slightly because I want to
02:36 have a little of that texture in there. I don't want it to be sleepy or smooth so just
02:41 kind of pulling it out here. So now we're going to go ahead and just kind of pull that
02:47 top layer together and push it up. This is where all of our volume is going to be at.
02:53 I'm going to use a little bit of our Flexible Hold by Kenra just for a little bit more texture
02:59 and hold. I'm going to pull the top sections together here, pull it and then what I like
03:09 to do is just ever so slightly twist it. That kind of just keeps it all into place. So we're
03:16 twisting it and then take my bobby pin, always using the lip down, that's what I like to
03:22 do. I'm not one to open my bobby pins but if you guys open it that's okay. This is just
03:27 what works really well for me. Taking the lip again, gripping onto some hair and then
03:36 pushing it in. So it's almost like a little fringe twist. So now we have that fullness.
03:41 I'm going to add another bobby pin right here. We have that fullness in there. Then I like
03:48 to spread the hair out a little bit because you don't want it too full vertically. You
03:57 want it kind of rounded as well. Taking some of our Flexible Hold, spraying it on there,
04:05 holding the base of our bobby pin here and then just pinching and pulling it up for a
04:11 little fullness and erratic texture before we move on. So this is the first part of our
04:18 puzzle here. So now we're going to gather all of the hair and create a low ponytail.
04:25 I'm just going to go ahead and take a hair elastic and then secure it into place. This
04:32 gives us a nice base and foundation for a whole hairstyle. So we're just going to take
04:39 an elastic here and create a low pony. It's really important that you have your client
04:48 look forward and not down. If they went down with their head, you'd have a lot of droop
04:55 at the nape area. Don't want that. So now inside this ponytail, we're going to create
05:02 just a three strand braid. I love braids and updos because it really allows you to get
05:09 a nice structure to the hair and then when you stretch it and pull the braid out, it
05:13 kind of gives it a messier style but still has that structure because it's inside your
05:18 three strand braid. So we're just going to go ahead and divide it in three sections here.
05:23 You guys can see. Make sure that the density is the same in all three sections. And then
05:30 we're just going to do a simple three strand braid. You can certainly do a fishtail braid
05:41 if you'd like. A rope braid is really nice but today we're just going to do a simple
05:47 three strand braid. I'm not using a lot of tension. You want it to be a little bit looser
05:53 because we're going to pull it out because we're going for a messier style. I love disheveled
05:58 kind of bridal looks. They're very popular right now. Once we get to the ends, we're
06:04 going to secure it with a hair elastic. And this is my favorite part. I like calling it
06:11 pancaking. It's also known as stretching the braid. We're going to use more of our Volume
06:16 Dry Shampoo spray by Kynra. Spray it pretty aggressively. Now we're going to go ahead
06:23 and pull and stretch our braid out. It's almost like you're fanning a deck of cards. So just
06:29 pinch and pull, pinch and pull. Get pretty aggressive with it. It's okay to kind of ease
06:34 it out at first. You don't want to get overly aggressive at first because you don't want
06:39 to cause a lot of friction because then it's going to cause a lot of frizziness and no
06:43 bride wants to look like they have frizzy hair. So pinch and pull, pinch and pull. So
06:49 I'm going to go back through it and do that again. And what's nice about having that Volume
06:56 Dry Shampoo in there is it just creates a lot more bulk to your braid. So that's really,
07:01 really key. Sometimes when people create braids and they don't have the proper products in
07:06 it, it kind of can go a little limp or like flat. So this just gives it a little bit more
07:10 substance to it. Okay. So this is a nice full braid. Now we're just going to go ahead and
07:17 simply create a braided bun. You guys can see it there. Taking our bobby pins, in a
07:26 circular like motion, I'm going to go ahead and pin it. So left to right and then under
07:30 usually is what I do. And turn her slightly so I can see the shape. Just bobby pinning
07:38 it. What I like to do is take the lip of the bobby pin, grip onto a lot of hair and then
07:45 push it towards our base, which is also where that hair elastic is. Spread it out a little
07:52 bit. So this is really simple guys. You don't have to overly complicate bridal styles. This
07:59 is perfect for a bride, a bridesmaid, for an evening event. You can wear it several
08:07 different occasions. Go ahead and turn her a little bit so you guys can start seeing
08:12 that shape. Alright. So then I kind of look at it, make sure it's nice and balanced. I'm
08:19 going to add a little bit of silkening mist by Kinra, just to kind of smooth any flyaways
08:29 we might have. This really helps relax the hair. Alright. So now we're going to start
08:36 moving onto the front. So I envision, you can style this a lot of different ways. So
08:42 what I envision is having a nice Dutch breakthrough in here and draping it back. But you could
08:47 certainly twist the hair, kind of pull it back into the braid. There's several different
08:51 ways that you can utilize this technique and I definitely encourage you guys to get creative.
08:57 So I like how Taylor has this really nice soft piece. So I'm going to go ahead and leave
09:01 that out just for a little bit of something around the face. Maybe leave a little tendril
09:05 down here as well. So what we're going to do is create a Dutch braid up here. So Dutch
09:11 braid is also known as an inverted braid. So you're working the braid underhanded as
09:16 opposed to overhanded. So it kind of gives the hair or the braid a little bit more pop
09:21 because it gives it the effect like the braid is on top of the head. So we're going to go
09:26 ahead and create a little section here. You guys can see this. So then we're going to
09:33 work underhanded. I'm going to go ahead and create three sections so you guys can see.
09:40 So I'm going underhanded. Right under into the middle, left under into the middle. Now
09:49 we're back over to the right. We need to add hair into this. So from the hairline to the
09:54 braid we're going to add that hair. Now that right section is going to go under into the
10:00 middle. Now we're on the left side. We need to incorporate some hair in that left side.
10:05 So we're going to take a small piece of hair, add it in there, left going under into the
10:11 middle and then just continuing while we're over directing towards that braided bun. It's
10:17 really important to over direct braids the proper way or you're going to end up having
10:22 too much droop or a loose braid. So I'm going to start turning her because again I want
10:26 to over direct it to that braided bun. So we're over to the right. I'm going to add
10:33 all this hair leaving that little tendril out right under to the middle. Now we're just
10:41 going to continue to work underhanded here. And I'm going to leave probably about two
10:54 inches out from the bottom. We're going to use our volume dry shampoo now to really stretch
11:01 that braid out. And turn her a little bit and then again kind of fan our braid out.
11:09 This makes it really nice and full. And if you guys have any questions please let me
11:23 know. Do you want to come over here and maybe list off any questions that we may have Alex?
11:30 We're actually filming in Studio Day Confessions with my videographer Alex. So I'm going to
11:41 have him ask me any questions that you guys might have. We're actually filming for my
11:47 app. So I'm going to use a little bit of hairspray at this point. And what I like to do with
11:53 this braid, I like to flip it because I like to have a little bit of tendrils down. So
11:58 we're going to flip it and then that's where we're going to go ahead and secure our braid.
12:03 Do we have any questions? None at all. No one has questions. Alright. Are you guys liking
12:10 this though? So simple right? I kind of like how there's little delicate pieces there.
12:16 So we're going to go ahead and leave that. I'm going to do the same thing on the opposite
12:20 side. I'm actually going to have you hold on to this. What kind of hairspray are you
12:27 using? I'm using the Kenra Flexible Hold. So I'm utilizing all Kenra hair products right
12:32 now. And why? Why? Because it has a flexible hold. What's great about that is that it's
12:39 definitely very workable. You want to be using, you want to definitely be using a flexible
12:47 hairspray. Something that's very workable. You don't want to get something that's too
12:51 tacky or too stiff while you're creating your updo. So the flexible hold allows me to really
12:57 work with the hair while I'm shaving it. So on this side we're going to do the same thing
13:03 you guys. Take a small section of hair, divide it in three sections. Left section goes under
13:13 into the middle, right section goes under into the middle. Now this section in the middle
13:19 is over to our left. We're going to incorporate hair into it. Couple of questions. Why are
13:26 you using dry shampoo? Dry shampoo gives it a nice grip and texture to it. It almost plumps
13:33 up the hair a bit. It just gives it a little bit more substance to it. I also utilize the
13:39 Dry Texture Spray by Kenra as well. But Kenra just came out with the Volume Dry Shampoo
13:45 which is, first off it's kind really. It has a little bit more coarseness to it than a
13:50 regular dry shampoo. So what it allows me to do when I pancake my braid out, it gives
13:55 the braid and the hair a little bit more substance to it from being like flat or floppy. So it's
14:01 been working out really well for that. So continuing. So I'm going to take a little
14:08 bit of my three strand braid. So now we're going to go ahead and utilize our Volume Dry
14:15 Shampoo. Really stretching the braid. Corinne says she missed the beginning. Will she be
14:22 able to watch this from the beginning? Oh yeah, you guys, you can always refer back
14:29 to this video. This is going to stay on American Salon's Facebook indefinitely, most likely.
14:35 So you can definitely watch the beginning from there. Mike says, did you prep the hair
14:40 before starting the style? All we did was add a little bit of texturizing mist throughout
14:45 to add a little bit of grit and texture. Texturizing mist by Kenra. And then I blow dried it and
14:51 then added just a soft bit of wave to it. Natalia asks, what is pancaking? Pancaking
14:58 is also known as stretching the braid. And why I didn't create that term, I think it's
15:04 actually a YouTube term. But it actually flattens the braid, so it's kind of like pancaking.
15:10 But it gives it a nice full texture to it as far as the braid gets really nice and full.
15:17 Okay, so I'm going to go ahead and flip the ends on this side and then create, or secure
15:24 it with a bobby pin. So I can get a bobby pin here. So I'm going to go ahead and secure
15:31 it. All right, so I'm just going to go ahead and slip that bobby pin in there. Maybe one
15:38 more just to double secure it. But I hope you guys enjoyed. If you have any questions,
15:46 this would be a good time to ask. You can find my education online on YouTube. I utilize
15:53 a lot of Kenra products, as well as I'm launching an educational app, which is going to be a
15:58 subscription service. And I'm updating every month for new hair tutorials. That's actually
16:05 what we're here doing today, is filming for my app, which should be out in a couple weeks,
16:11 mid-November. So I'm going to pull a little tendril out right here.
16:15 Emily says, "How do you stop the layers from popping out of the braid when you deconstruct
16:20 it?"
16:21 That's a great question, Emily. So Emily's question was, "How do you prevent the layers
16:26 from popping out when you stretch the braid?" The key to that is you need to add bend to
16:30 the hair first. Because if it has a little bend and you start pulling it, the curl almost
16:36 goes with the braid, opposed to popping out. So never pancake a braid that's on really
16:41 coarse, straight hair. It's going to stick straight out. So that's a big one.
16:46 So now I'm just going to go through, adding a little bit more of the silkeny mist by Kenra.
16:51 "Who needs to know when the app's going to be announced?"
16:58 Who? What? Soon! Hopefully! So for the app, it's pretty much done. We're just kind of
17:01 working out a few little bugs, making sure that it works really properly for you guys.
17:07 But it's going to be really awesome. I have a lot of people that are going to be featured
17:11 on the app as well. So it's not only going to be my education, but it's going to be a
17:15 lot of education from a lot of the movers and shakers of the industry. And Kenra being
17:20 one of my sponsors, utilizing a lot of their products as well as a few of my other sponsors.
17:26 But it's going to be awesome. I can't be more excited about it. So we're here actually filming
17:32 for it. I'm a bit under the weather, but I'm doing it anyway because it's going to be awesome.
17:38 So adding some of our silkeny mist here, pulling on our braid. And that is about it. You guys
17:45 could definitely tweak it as you see fit. If you had a braid that wanted a little bit
17:52 more volume, that totally would be fine. You could add a little bit more curl, maybe swoop
17:56 this hair back. So there's several different ways that you can utilize the braided bun
18:01 technique. So I hope you guys enjoyed it. Definitely follow me on Instagram @theconfessionsofahairstyles.
18:07 Definitely follow Kenra Professional on their Instagram as well. They have a lot of amazing
18:12 products. So thank you so much American Salon for having me. Thank you Kenra Hair Products.
18:17 And I will see you guys soon.
