00:00 Welcome to the fourth episode of Animal Battle.

00:02 This episode is going to be an interesting one, because you might realize that your whole life was a lie,

00:07 and you'll learn some pretty interesting facts, which might surprise you,

00:10 as we are going to compare two amazing candidates for the title of the best mammal in the world.

00:15 So, without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, it is my honor to present you our two competitors.

00:22 The grey wolf versus the spotted hyena.

00:26 Also, stick until the end of the video to find out who is the winner of the last battle between the brown and polar bear.

00:32 Let's do it. I'm Mario, and this is Animal Battle.

00:35 Grey wolves and spotted hyenas have some similarities,

00:44 but don't forget that the winner of Animal Battle isn't necessarily the strongest,

00:47 because we are going to evaluate them by six different characteristics.

00:51 Agility, attack, defense, intelligence, bonus skill, and survival.

00:57 So let's begin with agility. Spotted hyenas can run at a speed of 60 km/h, which is pretty great,

01:02 but they are outspeeded by grey wolves, which can reach speeds of up to 55 to 70 km/h.

01:08 Their speeds are pretty impressive, but such speeds can also be reached by other large felids.

01:12 What sets wolves and hyenas apart and gives them bonus agility points is the fact that,

01:16 unlike felids which can run at high speeds for a short distance and period of time,

01:19 grey wolves and spotted hyenas can run for kilometers and don't get tired as quickly.

01:23 Spotted hyenas can chase the prey for 5 km, so the prey will get tired eventually.

01:27 Grey wolves usually give up after 1 to 2 km, but one wolf was recorded to chase a deer for 21 km.

01:34 That is half a marathon. So we can say that both of them have high agility stats,

01:38 but the grey wolf wins here because of its speed and the ability to travel for bigger distances.

01:43 Agility stats are interesting, but I know you can't wait for me to compare their power.

01:47 So let's go right to attack and defense stats.

01:50 On average, grey wolves can measure 105 to 160 cm in length, plus a 29 to 50 cm tail.

01:57 They usually weigh around 30 to 50 kg. The largest one recorded weighed 80 kg.

02:02 The size of spotted hyenas might seem a little bit strange.

02:05 They usually have a body length of 95 to 165 cm, but females are actually larger and stronger than males,

02:12 weighing 45 to 64 kg, while males weigh just around 40 to 55 kg.

02:17 This is strange because in most species of mammals males are larger than females,

02:21 but in spotted hyenas it is the other way around.

02:24 Spotted hyenas kill their prey brutally.

02:26 Small prey is being shaken in the mouth, while large prey is eaten alive.

02:29 To kill a large prey like a moose, grey wolves bite it from behind, making it to bleed.

02:33 And to kill medium-sized prey, wolves bite the throat to suffocate it.

02:37 Wolves are also highly territorial, but what gives a spotted hyena a lot of points

02:41 is the fact that it has an extremely powerful bite.

02:44 It has one of the strongest bites relative to its weight and uses it to crush the bones of the prey.

02:49 Both of them have competitors.

02:51 Spotted hyenas live in Africa and are stronger than other hyenas.

02:54 They can steal the prey from cheetahs and leopards, but sometimes male leopards can beat them.

02:59 Their biggest enemies are lions, which are more powerful and can steal their prey.

03:02 Grey wolves can be found all across Eurasia and North America.

03:05 They can kill coyotes, foxes and doves.

03:08 In Israel they might encounter striped hyenas.

03:11 Brown bears are stronger than them and can sometimes kill grey wolves or their pups.

03:14 But wolves can also kill the brown bear's cubs.

03:17 So their only serious predators are tigers, which are much stronger than grey wolves.

03:21 Also grey wolves have some extra defense points because of the long hair around their neck.

03:25 So we can observe that hyenas are slightly better at attack due to their powerful bite

03:29 and wolves at defense because they have a thick coat around their neck for protection.

03:33 Even though both grey wolves and spotted hyenas have pretty high attack and defense stats,

03:37 they are still no match for bigger felids and bears.

03:39 But don't worry because they have a lot of bonus kill points.

03:42 Grey wolves have a good sense of smell, being able to detect prey from 2 to 3 kilometers away.

03:47 Spotted hyenas on the other side have very good auditory perception.

03:51 They can detect sounds of predators killing prey or feeding on carcasses over distances of up to 10 kilometers.

03:56 Also, unlike wolves, hyenas rely more on their sight.

04:00 And now things are about to get sexual because we are going to talk about reproduction organs.

04:05 Just joking, don't worry, it is just biology.

04:07 But if you still don't want to see that you can skip for some seconds.

04:11 So what would you say if I told you that this is a female?

04:14 Seriously, it is a female and that is her clitoris which is positioned and shaped like a penis.

04:21 It is called pseudopenis and scientists still don't understand its purpose.

04:25 You might imagine that it is pretty hard to reproduce with that thing

04:28 and females have to retract it if they accept to reproduce with a male.

04:31 But it doesn't have any evolutionary advantage because females are still stronger and can defend on their own.

04:36 Also, when the female gives birth for the first time,

04:39 in 6 out of 10 cases the cub gets stuck in that organ and dies,

04:43 which is not good for the female which can also die.

04:46 The next births go smoother but it is still unknown why would they develop such an organ.

04:50 Enough talk about pseudopenises.

04:52 Let's see why spotted hyenas and grey wolves should have a lot of bonus kill points.

04:56 It is because they live and hunt in groups.

04:58 Living and hunting in group is a huge bonus for an animal species

05:02 because together they are a lot stronger and can even beat other stronger felids or pairs.

05:07 Spotted hyenas are organized in groups of at most 80 individuals named clans.

05:11 They have a very interesting organization.

05:13 All females have a higher status than males.

05:15 The newborn cubs inherit their mother status.

05:18 They get the best food and the best places to sleep

05:20 and the cubs of the dominant female are taken care by all the other females.

05:24 For the female cubs inheriting a higher status life will be wonderful.

05:28 The same can't be said about their brothers,

05:30 which, after becoming 2 years old, are forced to leave their clan and go look for a new one.

05:35 After being bullied by the members of the new clan they are finally accepted,

05:39 having the lowest status in the clan.

05:41 They get the fewest and the worst part of the prey

05:43 and can't go higher by defeating other males.

05:46 They have to wait for other males to join the clan

05:49 or for males which have a higher status to die.

05:51 So it is pretty bad to be a male hyena.

05:53 I think I don't need to tell you about the organization of grey wolf packs

05:56 because everybody knows that unrelated wolves form a pack,

05:59 the strongest ones becoming the alpha male and female

06:01 and the omegas have to beat the alpha in order to become the new leader.

06:05 But actually, this is all wrong.

06:07 The leaders of the pack are the parents which care for their pups

06:09 until they get old enough to help them with hiding and raising new pups.

06:13 Usually they don't accept unrelated members

06:15 and the leaders aren't the strongest wolves in the pack,

06:18 but the parents, which contradicts the whole theory about alpha and omega wolves.

06:22 Once again I realize that my whole life was a lie.

06:36 Now let's talk about intelligence.

06:38 Both hyenas and wolves are pretty intelligent, being predators and social animals.

06:42 Spotted hyenas work very good in groups.

06:44 In an experiment, two hyenas had to tag two ropes in unison to earn a food reward

06:49 and they figured it out very quickly.

06:51 Experienced hyenas even helped the inexperienced ones to solve a problem.

06:55 Grey wolves are also intelligent, having very good hunting strategies.

06:59 They form a polygon around the prey

07:01 and most of the wolves distract the prey's attention while the leader tries to kill it.

07:05 It is hard to say which one is smarter,

07:07 but spotted hyenas and grey wolves definitely have a lot of intelligence points.

07:11 And last, but not least, let's talk about survival.

07:13 Because there is no use to have high stats if a species is going extinct,

07:17 both of them are listed as a least concerned species.

07:19 There are around 27,000 to 47,000 spotted hyenas in the wild.

07:24 They can have 2 to 4 cubs and can live from 4 to 8 years depending if they are males or females,

07:29 because males live twice less than females.

07:31 There are around 300,000 grey wolves in the wild.

07:34 They can give birth to 4 to 7 pups and can live up to 7 to 8 years in the wild.

07:39 So, overall, spotted hyenas and grey wolves are amazing animals and have high stats,

07:43 grey wolves winning at agility, defense and survival,

07:46 while spotted hyenas are winning at attack and bonus skill.
