Bald Eagle versus Golden Eagle.
00:04
This is a battle of two agile and powerful raptors.
00:08
Let's do it!
00:09
I am Mario and this is Animal Battle.
00:13
So as always, the six characteristics that we are going to compare our two candidates on
00:23
are Agility, Attack, Defense, Intelligence, Bonus Skill and Survival.
00:29
And after that, you'll cast your votes in the comments to choose the winner.
00:33
But this time their Agility stats are going to be different,
00:36
since it wouldn't be fair to compare flying birds with other terrestrial or aquatic animals
00:41
from previous Animal Battle episodes.
00:43
Before we go straight to their Agility stats,
00:45
me and Spike would really appreciate it if you smashed that subscribe button,
00:49
since we are so close to reaching 30.000 subscribers at the time this video is released.
00:54
Time to go to the first characteristic, Agility.
00:57
So these two birds of prey are incredible when it comes to flight.
01:00
The Bald Eagle can reach speeds of up to 70 km/h when gliding
01:04
and up to 160 km/h during a dive.
01:08
That is already impressive, but the Golden Eagle overshadows the Bald Eagle's speed,
01:12
being able to reach up to 190 km/h when gliding.
01:17
When stooping or diving, the Golden Eagle will hold its leg up against its tail
01:21
and its wings tight against its body to be more aerodynamic.
01:25
In this way, it can reach 240 to 320 km/h,
01:30
making it the second fastest bird or even animal in the world,
01:34
after the Peregrine Falcon, of course.
01:36
Still, if we were to compare their horizontal speeds only,
01:39
the Golden Eagle would be faster than the Peregrine Falcon.
01:42
That being said, the Bald Eagle is still more maneuverable in flight than the Golden Eagle.
01:47
Also, because flying requires a huge amount of energy,
01:50
especially for these big raptors,
01:52
they try to save it using thermal convection currents to ascend with less effort.
01:57
Now we shall see their agility stats.
01:59
It is no surprise that they are doing so well when it comes to agility,
02:06
even after raising the bar higher than normal.
02:09
And, of course, the Golden Eagle takes the lead due to its incredible speed.
02:13
Now we are moving on to bonus skills.
02:16
And their bonus skills are more or less related to their eyes.
02:19
Both the Bald Eagle and the Golden Eagle have an incredible vision,
02:22
which is crucial for spotting prey.
02:24
Their vision is actually 4 to 5 times better than our own.
02:27
With a 340 degree field of vision and two separate focus points,
02:31
they even see more at once than we can.
02:34
Oh yes, add to that the fact that they can see ultraviolet light,
02:38
which is outside our spectrum of visible light,
02:41
and the fact that they can even see prey that is camouflaged or swimming underwater.
02:46
With all these bonus skills, these eagles can spot a rabbit from 3 km away
02:50
and an ant from the height of a 10-storey building.
02:53
Also, to keep their eyes moist all the time but still be able to see,
02:57
these eagles have a nictitating membrane, which is basically another transparent eyelid.
03:02
This grants them the ability to keep their eyes on the target without interruption while chasing it.
03:07
By the way, if you've enjoyed this video so far, give it a thumbs up,
03:11
and if you really hate it, you can give it a thumbs down.
03:14
Either way, the YouTube algorithm will consider this feedback as more audience interaction,
03:19
and will show it to more people, so we can see their bonus skill stats now.
03:23
They are pretty good, and they will need these bonus skills for the next part.
03:30
What is next? But of course, the attack and defense stats.
03:34
As in most raptor species, sexual dimorphism can be observed in these two eagle species too,
03:39
females being about 25% larger than males.
03:42
The bald eagle can weigh up to 6.3 kg and reach a length of up to 102 cm.
03:48
Their wingspan is impressive, being up to 2.3 m.
03:52
The size of a golden eagle is comparable to that of a bald eagle.
03:55
Female golden eagles reach 5.1 kg on average, up to 102 cm in length,
04:01
and have a wingspan of up to 2.34 m.
04:04
These large birds must have a big appetite too, right?
04:09
What would you like to order, gentlemen?
04:12
Mr. Bald Eagle, are you going to have your usual fish,
04:15
or would you like some birds like the goshawk, peregrine falcon, osprey,
04:19
or some mammals like a hare, raccoon, or beaver?
04:23
The bald eagle has a varied diet of up to 400 different species,
04:27
but this time it will go for the usual fish.
04:30
Once the target has been detected, it will swoop down over the water
04:33
and snatch the fish out of the water with its sharp talons.
04:36
Its hind talon is actually the largest one,
04:39
and is used to pierce the vital parts of the prey.
04:41
The bald eagle can also carry prey of the same weight.
04:44
Sometimes though, if the fish is too big to just fly with it out of the water,
04:48
the bald eagle will swim to the shore carrying the fish.
04:51
What is interesting is that sometimes a pair of bald eagles can cooperate while hunting.
04:56
One will distract the prey, while the other surprises it coming from the back.
05:00
The bald eagle will also go for carrion if it is available.
05:04
When eating its well-deserved meal, it can also store up to 1 kg of food
05:08
in a pouch in the throat called a crop.
05:11
What about you, Mr. Golden Eagle?
05:13
May I recommend a hare, marmot, ground squirrel, marten, fox,
05:18
or are you that hungry that you'd go for a deer?
05:21
Once the gold eagle has passed the target, it will begin its dive.
05:24
If the prey has nowhere to hide,
05:26
it doesn't have any chance of escaping from the fast golden eagle.
05:30
The eagle will use its agility and speed to catch up to the prey,
05:33
and its really powerful grip combined with its long sharp talons,
05:36
which are 1 cm longer than those of the bald eagle,
05:39
to kill the prey instantly.
05:41
It also has a powerful beak that will easily rip off pieces of meat,
05:45
an important ability for any raptor.
05:47
When it comes to defense, these two eagles have no natural predators
05:50
once they are big enough and are considered apex predators.
05:54
But see if they are being smart and stay away from the ground as much as possible,
05:58
because large land predators like wolverines or bears can still overpower them.
06:02
These raptors are also territorial,
06:04
and fights between the bald eagle and the golden eagle have been observed
06:07
where their ranges overlap.
06:09
As for who would win such a fight, really depends on the individuals involved.
06:13
Let's see their attack and defense stats.
06:15
They have really high stats as expected from such large raptors.
06:23
Next, we will take a look at their intelligence stats.
06:26
Like other raptors, these two birds are really smart,
06:29
because they need it for hunting.
06:31
Their intelligence has been demonstrated when bald eagles hunt in pairs
06:34
and when golden eagles knock off prey off cliffs,
06:37
using gravity to their advantage.
06:39
So their intelligence stats are…
06:41
Pretty nice.
06:46
And lastly, let's take a look at their survival stats.
06:49
These eagles are doing well here, both being listed as least concerned species.
06:53
An estimated number of 150,000 bald eagles can be found all across North America.
06:59
The golden eagle can be found all across the Northern Hemisphere,
07:02
being spotted in Eurasia, North America and the North of Africa,
07:06
and having an estimated population of 100 to 200,000 individuals.
07:11
The bald eagle will build a huge nest where it will lay 1 to 3 eggs at once.
07:16
The hatchlings will have an average lifespan of 20 years.
07:19
The oldest wild bald eagle recorded lived 38 years.
07:23
The golden eagle will lay up to 4 eggs at once,
07:26
while the hatchlings will have an average lifespan of 14 years,
07:29
although the oldest one recorded lived 32 years in the wild.
07:33
In captivity, both birds can get to an even older age.
07:36
Let's see their final stats.
07:38
These two birds of prey have really good stats across all six categories,
07:46
but which of them is the winner?
07:48
This is all up to you because you can cast your votes in the comments
07:52
by writing #bald to vote for a bald eagle or #golden to vote for a golden eagle.
07:58
Speaking of votes, it is time to see who is the winner of the last animal battle
08:04
between the Komodo dragon and the black caiman.
08:07
This time it was really close, but after counting all your votes,
08:12
the winner is...
08:14
The black caiman!
08:16
A powerful reptile and an apex predator.
08:18
If you wanted the Komodo dragon to win, don't be upset,
08:21
because here, when I'm from animals, we love and respect all animals.
08:26
Once again, don't forget to cast your votes in the comments
08:28
writing #bald or #golden.
08:31
I'd also like to thank my patrons for supporting me all this time,
08:34
and if you really love what I'm doing, you can also support me on Patreon
08:38
to fill up that list with your name.
