The Met Police evicted more than 40 squatters staying in the Autonomous Winter Shelter on June 1. The shelter had been using a disused convent in Shadwell since September 2022, but had received a letter on April 30 2023 saying they had to vacate the premises.

An organiser of the shelter however said they believed any police intervention to be potentially unlawful, and described the eviction as a "power play" by the Met.
